Position Title: Production Bakery Support

Department: Merchandising

Supervisory Responsibility: Not responsible for supervising others.

Reports To: Category Assistant Manager - Bakery Production

Region: Oregon/SW Washington

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Position Description: Slicing, trimming, finishing and packaging of various bakery/pastry products. Will assist in picking of orders and staging for daily shipping of bakery and pastry items to stores. May assist with large-batch from-scratch production of bakery and pastry menu items. Provides exceptional service and contributes to a positive and collaborative team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Position Specific Functions

  • Prepares packaging station for pre-shift work, shift turnovers and end of day breakdown.

  • Checks quality, count and condition of all food preparation products prior to packaging. Communicates any issues to management team.

  • Slicing, trimming, and finishing various bakery products following program guidelines, SOPs and HAACP procedures.

  • Packaging of bakery items into specific containers as instructed, including; boxes, bags, Cambro food containers, clamshells and other packaging as required.

  • Stocks and rotates products in dry and/or refrigeration storage spaces with attention to quality assurance standards and follows first in/first out procedures to assure proper rotation of stock. Labels and dates all food.

  • Accurate recording of production amounts, waste/shrink and time/temperature information on hard copy or computerized data entry as required.

  • Works in a manner that maintains processes and procedures that effectively control production, packaging, shrink, sanitation and equipment maintenance.

  • Follows all established systems to maintain consistency and integrity of product.

  • May assist in large-batch from-scratch production of bakery items, including but not limited to; artisan bread, sandwich bread, roles and/or all other specialty goods.

  • Adjust priorities and tasks as necessary to achieve daily packing and shipping goals.

  • Notifies manager on duty of any situations relating to food safety, work safety, productivity, security or any other situation that may have an adverse effect on the facility.

  • Participates in picking orders and assembling product orders for delivery, as needed.

  • Maintains cleanliness, organization and rotation of all areas, products and supplies.

  • Handles damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.

  • Maintains awareness of current ads, promotions, holidays and events.

  • Demonstrates familiarity with products in department, with willingness to continue learning.

  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Required Permits and Licenses: Completion of all required local, state and federal Food and Work Safety trainings

Facilities, Sanitation, Work Safety and Food Safety

  • Adheres to work and food safety policies set forth by the company and regulatory agencies.

  • Performs janitorial tasks in compliance with sanitation standards established by facility policy and state and local health departments. Contributes to facility cleanliness.

  • Maintains equipment, informs facility/department management of any problems.

  • Reports all safety concerns and work related injuries to management.

  • Frequent handwashing is required.

Tools and Equipment Used

This position may be required to use the following tools and equipment: automatic dish washing machines, electric and manual pallet jacks, ladders, carts, hand trucks, box baler, box cutter, floor scrubber, mop, broom, bread slicer, knifes, heat wrap machines, large-scale mixers, hand-mixers, proofers, ovens, slicers, cookie pucker, and all other automated and manual bakery and pastry equipment as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous food production, food packaging, kitchen, bakery or general manufacturing experience preferred.

  • Ability to learn and apply principles of safe food handling.

  • Knowledge and/or experience of basic supply and logistics principles preferred.

  • Friendly and service oriented, with an interest in food and baking.

  • Basic math and computation skills required.

  • Skills to work independently, effectively manage own time and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Skills to adapt to the shifting priorities and needs of a retail environment.

  • Skills to exercise good judgment at all times.

  • Self-motivated, with high attention to detail, quality and presentation.

  • Skills to read, understand and follow through on verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium work level

  • Continuously required to be on feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout shift. Sitting seldom required.

  • Have sufficient dexterity to operate machinery such as: automatic dishwasher system, broom, mop, floor cleaning equipment, power washer, disassemble, clean and adjust facility equipment and to clear drains as necessary.

  • Continuously required to: lift and carry 1-10 pounds; use arms, hands and wrists; grasping/squeezing; reach at/above shoulder; reach below shoulder

  • Frequently required to: lift and carry 11-20 pounds; bend/stoop; twist

  • Occasionally required to: lift and carry 21-50 pounds; push and/or pull 1-40 pounds; crouch/squat

  • Frequency of climbing stairs and ladders dependent on location

Work Environment

  • Work occurs in a grocery store environment which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery, moderate noise level, and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler, freezer, and bakery.

  • There may be exposure to dust, mold, gluten, fragrances and other fumes and airborne particles, fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants, and flowers.

  • Work requires use of and working in proximity to common commercial cleaning agents.

  • This position works on or around moving machinery or moving parts; may include vibration.
