Crawford Industries, now a part of Spartech, LLC has an opening for an Extrusion Utility Specialist on our team in Crawfordsville, IN. The Crawfordsville operation of the organization specializes in extruding and converting flat plastic sheet. Plastic sheet may have graphics added and the die cut into license plates, the lamp shade used in veterinary clinics, signage, file folders, 3-ring binders, covers for school date books, for example. We reuse our scrap plastic whenever possible to create our environmentally friendly products. Come join our Extrusion team as they extrude plastic material to help create all kinds of products for our customers.

General Summary and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for ensuring that all the extruder hoppers are maintained with adequate clean material as required by the order to keep the line running and eliminate down time. The Utility personnel will make color changes as specified by the operators, keeping scrap generation to a minimum.

Key Responsibilities to include:

  • Reviewing the extrusion production schedule and process sheet for job each to confirm that materials furnished will yield product required.
  • Locates material needed for each job.
  • Keeps material staging in an orderly manner.
  • Makes color or material changes per operator instructions.
  • Properly weighs and identifies regrind generated and moves to the blend storage area.
  • Combines partial gaylords of exact blends.
  • Grinds webbing when available while extruding like colors.
  • Uses scales to accurately report weight of all gaylords returned to inventory.
  • Assist maintenance staff with roll changes as necessary.
  • Assist operators as needed.
  • Keep work area clean and free of debris.

Requirements

Required Skills/Experience:

  • High School diploma or experience demonstrating equivalent skills and abilities.
  • Basic math skills
  • Able to read and use a tape measure
  • Able to use a hand truck to move materials
  • Able to operate sit down forklift
  • Will be required to climb stairs, lift up to 60 pounds, push, reach, and grasp, and work at heights
  • Will be working under adverse ambient temperature conditions particularly in the summer
This position reports to the Extrusion Manager.

We have eleven plastic extrusion lines producing 125,000lbs of plastic sheet a week! Plastic sheet is sold flat in a multitude of colors or can be converted into other items you might recognize such as license plates, grade, middle, and high school as well as college, school specific date book covers, custom binders or folders, pet collars (used by vets following surgery or injury), packaging, or signage. We can digitally print on plastic, screen print on plastic, die cut, flat cut, add items such as Velcro, labels, assemble and pack. We also reuse our scrap plastic whenever possible to create our environmentally friendly products. </p><p><strong><i>General Summary and Essential Duties & Responsibilities</i></strong></p><p>Supervises the activities of assigned hourly production associates in our Extrusion Department to ensure adequate, efficient production levels while maintaining the quality customers expect and scheduled ship dates while promoting and ensuring a safe working environment. This is a primarily day shift position, with some flexibility as needed to shift hours.</p><p><strong>Key Responsibilities to include:</strong></p><ul><li>Interviews, hires, promotes, trains, evaluates, and disciplines subordinates in accordance with established rules and regulations.</li><li>Continually monitors plant conditions and associate actions for compliance to established safety regulations and takes immediate corrective action when necessary. Investigates accidents and prepare necessary reports.</li><li>Responsible for following all established company rules.</li><li>Executing the business plan and reacting to changing conditions. Recommending and implementing corrective actions in problem areas.</li><li>Maintains records and submits reports relating to manpower, material, maintenance, quality, schedules, and safety. Recommends corrective action.</li><li>Ensuring a good system of controls that identifies and reduces scrap and repairs.</li><li>Conducting regular shift/department meetings, issuing minutes, and following up on action items.</li><li>Participating in the development and achievement of cost improvements.</li><li>Determining capital needs associated with operations, maintenance and technology improvement and participating in the acquisition of such items.</li><li>Maintaining working knowledge of equipment and processes while remaining current on technological advances in area of responsibility.</li><li>Overseeing the routine preventive maintenance and requesting repairs as needed to ensure equipment is maintained in a proper manner.</li><li>Reviews and corrects production associates’ hours for timekeeping.</li><li>Ensures that attendance issues are reported and handled in accordance with the attendance policy.</li><li>Maintains good housekeeping, safety, and industrial hygiene practices.</li></ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><p><strong>Required Skills/Experience:</strong></p><ul><li>High School diploma or GED equivalency, plus five (5) years in a manufacturing environment or a four (4) year college degree</li><li>Knowledge of manufacturing production methods, quality assurance techniques and general safety programs is recommended.</li><li>Plastics manufacturing experience is preferred.</li><li>Two (2) years supervisory experience.</li><li>Ability to tolerate a hot environment is required.
