Product Planner - Industrial Printing

The Product Planner is responsible for creating the "vision of the future" for Videojet Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) printers and integrating that vision into the overall Videojet corporate strategy. The Product Planner will define market segments, identify unmet market needs and resulting product opportunities. The Product Planner will then work with the regional stakeholders and engineering teams to create a 5-year roadmap to achieve the company's forecasted incremental revenue targets and aggressively wins share in the CIJ printer market. The Product Planner will gain approval for the roadmap from the company's senior leadership team which includes the President, regional VP/GMs, and other functional leaders. The Product Planner will then work together with the Business Unit Manager and Project Manager to lead engineering project teams through the execution of projects on this roadmap.

To be successful in this role, the candidate must:

  • Be able to gather qualitative and quantitative market research from all relevant personas in the printer purchasing decision, eliciting their unmet needs

  • Utilize market data to develop proactive strategies to maintain company competitiveness and drive breakthrough innovation in the company

  • Tell the customers' stories and strategic implications to the Senior Leadership Team to drive Videojet product and corporate strategy and resourcing decisions

  • Achieve results through indirect influence, ensuring all functional groups understand the link between their department's work, the customer needs, and the product roadmap

  • Work collaboratively with project core team members throughout the development process as product requirements are refined to properly balance the needs of the customer and product time to market

Key responsibilities include:

  • Gain and maintain a deep and up-to-date understanding of the customer requirements of the marking and coding market, including Voice of Customer, involvement and engagement in appropriate industry organizations, and analysis of internal data

  • Lead the discovery of adjacent and transformational innovation opportunities by identifying the customers' biggest problems running their businesses and tying that back to opportunities for Videojet

  • Conduct quantitative market research to assess market segmentation models, customer tradeoffs, and inform business cases

  • Create and manage the Product Roadmap for marking and coding products for assigned printing technologies

  • Lead competitive product evaluations and drive creation of price/performance charts to derive pricing models

  • Creation of the "Market Requirements Documents" (MRD), which reflect complete, accurate, and true understanding of the marking and coding market and its needs

  • Lead development of Toll Gate 0 and Toll Gate 1 presentations for project approval

  • Act as Product Owner for software development team. Create user stories, support Scrum sprints, and conduct usability testing of user interfaces.

  • Key financial measurement - roadmaps designed to achieve the company's 5 year forecasted incremental revenue targets

The candidate will visibly embody the following traits:

  • Interpersonal and interviewing skills to build rapport and communicate with customers in order to comprehensively understand their market problems and discover unmet needs.

  • Multicultural awareness allowing them to interact with customers and associates throughout the world

  • Associative thinking ability allowing them to process multiple incomplete data sources into a cohesive product strategy

  • Confident to make decisions based on incomplete data sets in order to progress projects forward and then development of plans to reduce risk associated the gaps in the data set

  • Works effectively in matrixed organizations, showing the right balance between conviction of key ideas he/she wants to champion and sufficient flexibility to adapt to change and redirect resources effectively and appropriately.

  • Strong analytical skills including experience with Conjoint and Max Diff studies as well as statistical analysis to test and support (or refute) business strategies

  • Understanding of user experience and the factors that contribute to the usability of an industrial machine

  • Education

  • Undergraduate degree, MBA preferred
  • Work experience
  • 10 years in industrial product management, product planning, new product development, and/or corporate strategy/consulting. Industrial equipment experience is required; packaging industry experience is desirable.
  • Special qualifications
  • Extensive experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative VOC, identifying needs for technical products in a B2B market
  • Level of travel required. Moderate (25-40%) across the globe
