Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging

The Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging develops, designs, and tests sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that ensure safe and effective presentation of Acumed products during surgery and protection of products during transport and storage. These systems include customized surgical tray systems that facilitate product reprocessing and re-sterilization as well as sterile packaging that maintains sterile barriers throughout the product lifecycle. Responsibilities include research, planning, idea creation and realization, concept development, specification generation, testing and validation protocols, as well as effective communication with team members, management, and customers. The Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging also supports packaging solutions after development by collaborating with cross-functional groups when manufacturing and quality improvements or other activities are needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Leads small department projects.

  • Supports multiple product development projects for tray or packaging responsibilities.

  • Effectively articulates and influences technical discussions cross-functionally.

  • Collaborates effectively with external vendors to resolve issues related to projects.

  • Effectively reaches out and communicates with sales and field reps when needed.

  • Creates questions/surveys for events to gather input from hospital staff, consultants and field sales reps.

  • Presents to larger internal audiences.

  • Creates new test protocols for more complex experiments. Applies and adapts ASTM standards as needed.

  • Assists in the development and modification of Master Families and worst case considerations.

  • Performs critical CAD print/model reviews for tolerancing and manufacturability and translates outcomes into developing Best Known Methods (BKM's) and associated quality checks.

  • Performs 3D tolerance modeling and analysis to design constructs to ensure functionality and manufacturability.

  • Participates in creating design control documents.

  • Identifies project/product risks and assigns severity and probabilities within the Risk Management (RMR) system.

  • Assists with qualification and maintenance of internal testing equipment

  • Investigates and understands manufacturing requirements for projects assigned.

  • Utilizes Root Cause Analysis tools (RCA) to investigate, analyze and resolve more difficult issues.

  • Applies a wider range of statistical tools to testing methods, interpretation of test results and conclusions.

  • Understands how to leverage current manufacturing capabilities to product designs.

  • Researches and applies Operating Room and Sterile Processing practices to support projects assigned.

  • Gains and applies knowledge of Acumed products to tray and packaging solutions.

  • Researches and develops working knowledge of 2 or more technical specialties as assigned by manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Mechanical Engineering, or Equivalent with 2 or more years' experience*

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively with teammates and managers

  • Ability to lead teams on small projects

  • Ability to write test protocols & reports and conduct testing under limited supervision

  • Applied knowledge of 3D/2D software, ability to model and create drawings of moderate complexity for tray system components and sterile packaging

  • Knowledgeable and able to apply Level 1 & 2 GD&T principles to technical drawings

  • Knowledgeable and able to apply basic FEA analysis to mitigate design failure modes

  • Proficient in creating and managing ECO's through completion

  • Knowledgeable and ability to apply basic root cause analysis techniques to solve issues

  • Ability to read and understand medical journal articles and present data effectively to peers and perform clinical summaries and write clinical data reports.

  • Ability to read and understand patents.

  • Knowledgeable and ability to apply and navigate Acumed's Design control process

  • Completion and certification for Level 100 and 200 Anatomy and product training

  • Knowledgeable in at least one technical specialty area

  • Ability to conduct in depth literature searches

We are looking for two motivated individuals to join our team as Assistant Packaging & Warehouse Supervisor at the Hillsboro, ND and East Grand Forks, MN Factories Principle accountabilities for this position include but are not limited to: * Ensures compliance to requirements specified in programs for operation and food safety, operating procedures, administrative policies, and GMP's and adheres to product specifications defined by the Quality Assurance Program. * Facilitates audits. * Ensures implementation of the maintenance program to safeguard equipment reliability and troubleshoots maintenance as needed. * Develops and approves Job Safety Hazard Analysis. Conducts accident investigations and prepares and recommends corrective actions. Investigates First Aid Cases and maintains the case database. * Reviews and approves employee time while monitoring overtime pay and attendance issues. Schedules staffing. Resolves personnel issues. * Coordinates all packaging line and bulk storage and loading equipment maintenance activities. * Supervises the quality, storage, and curing of production sugars in storage bins and determines source for bulk loading and packaging. * Monitors work practices and equipment operation for inefficiencies, downtime, and maintenance issues and initiates appropriate remedial measures to minimize product rejects. * Monitors inventory of production materials. * Monitor QA/QC parameters ensuring compliance with Company standards and verify completion of supporting documentation. * Reviews and approves all product related Quality documentation involving inspections, control charts, cleaning/sanitation, and HACCP. * Coordinates and monitors scrolling stock equipment ensuring proper asset operation and maintenance in addition to movement of external OTR equipment. * Researches conditions and events involving Deviation/Incident Reports, reportable incidents, SQF findings and customer complaints and prepares technical reports and presentations. Minimum Requirements * Completion of a four year bachelor's degree. * Prior related supervisory experience and a background in high speed packaging line operations and bulk storage and packaging are desirable. * A thorough understanding of the safety issues and safe operation of all equipment and facilities is required. * Well developed written, presentation, and communication skills are essential. * The position requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills to motivate, train and enable a diverse work force while instilling a culture of accountability. * Knowledge in a technical field such as engineering, electronic controls or maintenance. * An understanding and ability to effectively apply food safety, quality assurance and safety regulations is essential. * Mechanical aptitude and technical abilities are required. * Enterprise computer systems abilities such as SAP, Microsoft Office Suite software including Project (or comparable) are also required. * The incumbent must possess a valid drivers' license.
