Product Validation

This product focused position verifies and validates the functionality of Cummins' products across a wide range of customer requirements, across a variety of applications, in various environments. This work plans, tracks, and evaluates results from a wide range of analyses and functional tests to assess product risk and performance. These results are expected to drive quality decisions and proactively resolve product issues before the product reaches the customer.

Obtains input and negotiates with Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R) stakeholders to define technical requirements and delivers an optimized component-based analytical and experimental verification plan to the program or project team.

Makes decisions in the areas of verification and validation that impact product performance, reliability, and durability.

Investigates and addresses potential component concerns or issues, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

Applies and supports the improvement of processes such as technical requirements, iDFMEA, Engineering Standard Work (ESW), DVP&R, test planning, and problem solving and tools such as Integrity, Microsoft Power BI, and McParts required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.

Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity over the entry level engineer level and with greater accountability to the project team.

Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

Skills

Product Problem Solving

  • Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

Product Verification and Validation Management

  • Coordinates the development of design verification and system validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes while managing risk and relative priority; evaluates analytical and experimental test results following engineering principles to verify that products meet internal technical requirements and to validate that design solutions meet customer needs; produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Product Failure Mode Avoidance

  • Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins' products.

Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control

  • Plans, schedules, coordinates and executes the activities involved in developing a product to a respectively aligned hierarchy of requirements and technical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capability meets or exceeds expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risks are higher than expected; understands the full product life cycle process and stakeholders.

Technical Documentation

  • Documents information based on knowledge gained as part of technical function activities; communicates to stakeholders with the goal of enabling improved technical productivity and effective knowledge transfer to others who were not originally part of the initial learning.

System Capability Engineering

  • Identifies system capability and risks through analysis or experimental testing of the system, sub-system, or super system in the context of its environment; negotiates and verifies requirements against capability to guide project scope and system development accordingly; assesses legacy system versus proposed new system solution capabilities and makes decisions as to how best to achieve system capability with consideration of stakeholder trade-offs.

Cross-Functional Design Integration

  • Translates the value package requirements that include the voices of many stakeholders into virtual designs, and communicates the capability of the design through an approved cross-functional design review.

Technical Documentation

Cummins Full Time Requirements:

  • College, university or equivalent technical experience required

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred

  • Must be able to complete 40 hours per week

  • 0-2 years in a position/internship relating to your field of study preferred

  • Able to start in January 2019

Base salary rate commensurate with experience. This position part of the vehicle systems integration group. As member of this team, you will be responsible for integrating automated transmissions into OEM chassis. Demonstrated success having worked in a Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering role on lower complexity product development activities, translating customer needs and negotiating into product development plans, technical profiles and/or product specifications. Ideal candidates should have experience both in product and customer facing roles with a proven track record of successful product decisions. Champion the DVP strategy for large complex programs. * Coordinate with the supporting test group and engineering leads * Fast and thorough resolution of technical issues * Support gear and bearing design work as needed * Support transmission architectural strategy and optimization * 4 year Mech Engineering degree required, Advanced degree preferred * Advanced knowledge of commercial vehicle powertrains, analysis methodology and failure modes * Strong problem solving and optimization skills, Six Sigma or DFSS BB preferred. * Strong collaboration skills, ability to effectively lead technical direction, mentor others and achieve results through others Primary responsibilities include: This dual product/life-cycle focused, developing leadership position provides the coordination and product leadership over one or more global product platforms that a business offers for customer product selection. Product Line Engineers are most often product domain specialists with significant experience both in product engineering and customer engineering based positions with a good understanding both for how customer needs translate into technical product solutions and making decisions as a platform product expert.
