YOU

As Product Engineer or Senior Product Engineer - Structural Connections, you'll provide expertise to support the design, development, implementation, specification, and installation of new products and systems for residential and commercial construction. Your area of focus will be fastener and/or mechanical anchor performance and the behavior of timber and concrete connections.

You'll be working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that consists of researchers, design engineers, material scientists, skilled craftspeople, statisticians, and manufacturing experts. You'll also work closely with internal cross-functional teams from Research & Development, Product Management, Codes & Compliance, Marketing, Manufacturing, Software Development, and Sales to ensure we're developing solutions that satisfy the needs of the ever-evolving Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industries.

You'll provide engineering support for fastener and/or mechanical anchor products and systems throughout their life cycle from development, through post-launch, and eventually planned obsolescence. More broadly, you'll represent Simpson Strong-Tie as a technical expert in the fields of engineering and connection performance and strive to ensure our knowledge base in these areas is state-of-the-art and serves to drive the industry forward.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING (% of Time)

Leverage the engineering resources defined above to support our branches, manufacturing locations, and teams in the field. This support will include developing solutions for new applications using existing products, assessing field issues or misinstallations and recommending a solution that ensures public safety, and/or evaluating the suitability of a non-conforming product for use. (40%)

Use testing as a critical tool to understand product and system performance. Apply research capabilities, numerical and statistical analysis techniques, and engineering judgment to develop structural building solutions for the construction industry. (20%)

Collaborate with our marketing team to develop and revise external-facing web-based and print content that describes how to specify and install our products. (20%)

Participate in the development and revision of building codes, material standards, test standards, and technical content for the US, South America, Canada, Europe, and AUS/NZ. (10%)

Provide internal support and training and evaluate processes and procedures in pursuit of continuous improvement. (10%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, you've got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering required.

  • Master of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering preferred.

  • Licensed Civil or Structural Engineer (P.E. or S.E.) required.

  • 5+ years engineering experience. Familiarity with building design and manufacturing methods as well as a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and standards.

  • Construction Materials & Design Methods: Practical working knowledge of common light-framed wood, mass timber, and concrete construction as well as associated design methodologies.

  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Ability to define problems, form hypotheses, collect data, draw inferences, and form valid conclusions.

  • Engineering Judgment: Ability to balance analysis with experience, perspective, and pragmatism when making decisions.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to tailor your message to the intended audience.

  • Customer focus: Solve customer problems efficiently, and effectively manage internal and external customer relationships.

    Readily adjust priorities to respond to pressing and changing customer needs. Recognize potentially adverse customer reactions and develop better alternatives.

  • Self-Management: Manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Employ a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment when completing assignments.

  • Teamwork: Work collaboratively with colleagues; demonstrate a genuine commitment to reach mutually beneficial solutions.

  • Technical Comprehension: Ability to analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond effectively to common technical inquiries or complaints from customers and/or regulatory agencies.

  • Product knowledge: General knowledge of Fastener, Mechanical Anchor, Connector, and Lateral Systems. General understanding of the product development processes.

  • Software Proficiency: Experience with Microsoft software including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook and PowerPoint. Experience with AutoCAD, BlueBeam Revu, Simpson Strong-Tie software/apps, SAP, and Smartsheet.

Travel

This position requires domestic and international travel up to 10% of the time.

Work Status & Location

This full-time, exempt position is located in Pleasanton, CA or in McKinney, TX and is open to a hybrid work schedule.

RELOCATION

Relocation will be considered for this position for qualified candidates.

PAY

$71,500 - $154,200 / year
