Product Development Engineer Sterile Fluids

Reports to: Product Development Manager, Medical

Job Overview:
Amcor's leadership in the healthcare segment coupled with strong R&D resources offers a unique position for growth through innovation in medical packaging. This position is directly responsible for the development, commercialization and process optimization of Amcor Flexibles' sterile fluid products including both primary and secondary packaging. He/she will drive all aspects of the platform development, including specification development, regulatory, internal and external validations, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain as it relates to the sterile fluid platform. He/she will mature in the job to become the customer primary technical contact and significantly contribute to the platform strategy development.

Job Dimensions:

  • Position is responsible for managing the day to day activities related to sterile fluid process and projects, as well as managing and driving project review and documentation efforts

  • Primary focus will be the AFA business at the AF Mundelein plant, but will also include interactions with other BGs as necessary to support global customers

  • Integral part of organic growth engine for sterile fluid platform

  • Will grow to be a key partner to the business development and sales partners

  • Will grow to be responsible for profitable sales growth in the sterile fluids segment through innovation excellence and customer intimacy

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Overall responsibility for managing Amcor Flexibles' sterile fluid packaging platform including development, commercialization, and manufacturing

  • Work directly with customers to understand their technical and packaging functional needs and translate those into Amcor product and service offerings

  • Develop sterile fluid packaging and service concepts, validate them internally and with customers, and bring them to a commercial status

  • Create, manage, and communicate development plans internally, and with customers, ensuring on-time delivery and exceeding expectations

  • Manage and lead regular project reviews, and effectively document ongoing progress

  • Evaluate and improve the sterile fluid production process in terms of quality and economics

  • Lead the creation of new manufacturing processes and quality assurance methodologies related to the production of sterile fluid packaging

  • Grow to acquire state-of-the-art knowledge on sterile fluid segment dynamics, being the subject matter expert in all aspects of sterile fluid production, packaging, and usage

  • Grow to acquire all regulatory aspects of sterile fluid packaging, guiding Amcor and its customers, and influencing key regulatory groups (e.g. FDA, ISO)

  • Grow to investigate intellectual property development, relevant technology scouting, and contributing to potential corporate venturing activities related to the acquisition of key technologies that will provide Amcor with a sustainable competitive advantage

Major challenges & complexities:

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects, while insuring detailed tasks are completed and documented effectively

  • Strong influencing skills with the ability to see issues from multiple viewpoints and understand differing needs of stakeholders (e.g. Manufacturing, Procurement, Suppliers, Customers, etc.)

  • Technical and regulatory complexity makes this a challenging segment. Role must have critical thinking ability and an ability to evaluate the big picture and break down into manageable actions

Qualifications/Requirements

Knowledge & Experience:

  • 3+ years of related experience in flexible packaging or packaging machinery (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of materials and processes related to flexible packaging or packaging machinery

  • Product development and/or manufacturing experience

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

Skills/Abilities/Behaviours:

  • Strong mechanical skills

  • Experience working with six sigma tools to improve manufacturing processes

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills

  • Proven ability to relate to and a desire to work with all organizational levels, from executive level to shop floor personnel

  • CAD experience

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, along with proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other computer applications

  • Specific knowledge of technical, regulatory, and production aspects of the sterile fluid market desirable (not required)

  • Proven experience leading cross functional teams

  • Relished a hands-on approach and not afraid to get directly involved on the shop floor

  • Project management experience

  • Able to summarize and organize key technical and project information effectively & efficiently

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills

  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow
