Product Design

This product focused positionapplies knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to createoptimized design concepts and mechanical design specifications consideringapplication, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing,assembly, and serviceability. This role effectively communicates the capabilityof a design concept to meet cross-functional requirements including assessmentof alternative and competitive design concepts, and works effectively across cross-functionaldisciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements including those requiredto resolve product issues.

  • Investigates Value PackageIntroduction (VPI) program team or field-based issues, understands causalmechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution from adesign perspective, while documenting results with guidance from moreexperienced team members.

  • Applies and supports the executionof processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and ValidationConsideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, DVA,GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench required to enable high quality component andsubsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.

  • Obtains input and negotiates withcross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior level designersto communicate the component and subsystem design intent through a thorough DesignReview package to the Product Preceding Technology, (PPT), Value PackageIntroduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) team requiring asuch holistic assessment of various design concepts.

  • Supports design decision making inthe areas of concept selection, concept optimization, and design specificationsthat impact customers targeted to be served by a given Product Preceding Technology,(PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR)initiative.

  • Owns problem resolution formoderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with agreater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity over the entry levelengineer level and with greater accountability to the project team.

  • Provides independent execution ofestablished work processes and systems, while still developing technology orproduct knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

  • Involves minimal direct managementof people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongsttechnicians and/or temporary student employees.

  • Contributes effectively toward teamgoals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to developproficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

CumminsCo-op program criteria:

  • Must be a full-time enrolled student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred

  • Must be able to complete a minimum of 12 weeks and up to a maximum of 52 week commitment

  • Must be able to complete 40 hours per week

  • Willingness to learn from others on the job

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary ratecommensurate with experience. Chemical Systems Engineer This applied science position applies chemical principles that create and develop product functionalities which are integrated and sold into Cummins' products. The position involves the research, design, analysis, testing and failure analysis of chemical based products, including catalyst, substrates, sensors, batteries and fuel cells. * Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity over an entry level engineer and with greater accountability to the project team. * Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes. * Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or interns. * Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role. * Understand the degradation factors that occur over time for our products that provide chemical functionality. * Work with partner suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure chemical functionality is verified in a robust manner.
