Supports and assists with the overall merchandising of departments with Produce/Floral Team Leaders including seasonal promotions. Ensures the implementation and carry out of regional and global programs for Floral and Produce Sub Teams. Helps maintain department profitability, increase department sales, and participate in regional meetings and special projects as assigned. This position will operate out of the Midwest Support Office in Chicago.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a highly visible presence throughout the stores designated by Produce Manager

  • Priorities in this position include, but are not limited to, training and staff development, growing comparative sales, competition review and analysis, and increasing department net profitability in Produce/Floral

  • Assist in the hiring and training of department level leadership including Team leader, Assistant Team Leaders and Buyers within our departments

  • Assist in the hiring and training of regional Merchandisers

  • Focus on improving retail operating systems (team leadership, staff structure)

  • Execute the regional merchandising plan for Produce/Floral

  • Maintain retail, quality and customer service standards

  • Ensure store level participation in the regional programs

  • Participate in regional Produce/Floral leadership group

  • Build productive relationships between regional Produce/Floral leadership group and Whole Foods Market stores

  • Have a passion for local product offerings, seek out new suppliers and work with the Distribution Center to onboard those suppliers, work with stores to ensure plans are in place to execute those programs

  • Comp shop in the retail market place

  • Maintain regular communication with Store Team Leaders

  • Assist in developing weekly product and merchandising strategies for stores

  • Assist in store openings, resets, and help coordinate department remodels in all parts of the region

  • Assist in special projects as defined by the Produce/Floral Coordinator and regional Produce/Floral leadership group

  • Perform other duties as assigned by regional leadership

Qualifications required:

  • 5 years Produce retail leadership experience, or equivalent

  • A deep passion and enthusiasm for produce and flowers

  • Great understanding of local suppliers and their attributes

  • The highest merchandising skills and retail standards

  • Experience with equipment, fixture, and store design

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and convey enthusiasm

  • Excellent computer skills

  • Must be self-motivated and solution oriented, and have good follow through

  • Ability to work independently and maintain high productivity

  • High level of creativity and vision

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and multi-task

  • Proactive approach to problem solving

Equivalent work experience and applicable certifications may be considered as well (Military Service, APICS, CPM, etc.). * 1 years of direct inventory management/supply chain experience required. * Minimum 3 years purchasing experience preferred, with food service experience a plus. * Possess superior oral and written communication along with strong analytical skills. * Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with suppliers, sales, field partners and other business contacts via telephone, email, and video conferencing. * Must have a general understanding of logistics and connection in support of an efficient distribution model. * Must be able to deal with high pressure situations to meet daily/weekly timelines with a high sense of urgency. * Ability to function in Microsoft Excel, as well as ERP system environments, with JDA experience preferred.
