Procurement Category Manager

Location: Buffalo Grove, Illinois

Reports to: Group Director, Indirect Procurement

Job Overview:

The Procurement Category Manager Packaging will champion strategic sourcing activities for secondary packaging and other assigned categories across the North America sites. This position is responsible for the development of category sourcing strategies across the region as well as being directly responsible for the execution of these strategies, including day-to-day interaction with internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure an uninterrupted supply of quality goods at optimum cost. The Manager collaborates and works closely with other functions in the organization to implement Total Cost of Ownership improvement opportunities within the category. This position will direct activities of a Secondary Packaging Engineer as well as a Procurement Analyst.

Job Dimensions:

  • 20% - 30% travel, mainly in the US.

  • Strong collaboration with Procurement co-workers as well as regional business groups.

Principal Accountabilities:

Strategy Development and Strategy Implementation (40%)

  • Leads the development of the overall multi-year procurement strategies for the category and translates the strategies into concrete action plans for implementation at the site level.

  • Works closely with Site Management to support implementation of specification and/or supplier change to ensure savings targets are met.

  • Evaluates current and future market and competitive conditions to use as a basis for decision-making, strategy development and strategy updates.

  • Directs teams to drive projects to reduce the total cost of ownership of secondary packaging, which includes initiatives such as supplier qualification, packaging redesign, material substitution, lean process design and manufacturing process improvement.

  • Stewards packaging standards, specifications and best practices through proper documentation with a view toward ongoing tools and process improvements.

  • Oversees internal work on packaging performance and qualification testing (ship testing, material compatibility, line trials) coordinating with internal and external groups to validate packaging successfully passes performance criteria.

  • Collaborates with peers in other Amcor businesses to secure benefits based on Amcor's global scale.

  • Manages efforts to install comprehensive and sustainable shipping controls processes and methodology, including but not limited to, package configuration options, packaging cost analysis, lane analysis, package design change and shipping configuration change impact analysis, temperature control validation, time & conditions transit tracking.

  • Assesses and manages risks across assigned categories.

Relationship Management (30%)

  • Develops strong relationships with vendors to identify improvement opportunities for packaging materials and equipment.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders early to ensure buy in and support, helping others to overcome resistance to change.

  • Facilitates joint supplier innovation initiatives with relevant stakeholders.

  • Leads scoping exercises to identify proposed projects as well as to prioritize the projects in terms of feasibility, cost savings and technical resource requirements.

  • Provides technical expertise to achieve resolution of quality and production issues through knowledge of the company's manufacturing methods.

  • Leads activities around root-cause analysis and problem solving to issues with current packaging and good technical practices on new designs to ensure success the first time.

Negotiation (20%)

  • Manages the negotiation process, content and results.

  • Guides a team of stakeholders, providing advice and direction for a multi-level negotiation process, to achieve desired business results including legal and commercial terms, claims resolution, service levels and performance expectations.

  • Negotiate contract language and provide recommendations to leadership/Legal and constructive feedback to suppliers to ensure that contracts are in place with key suppliers.

Financial Planning (10%)

  • Develops budgets and targets based on aggressive and realistic data-based goals.

  • Ensures that finance resource allocation is cost-effective and aligned with strategic and operational plans.

  • Manages analyst development of data sets to identify cost variables, should-cost models and other tools to formulate recommendations based on understanding of material cost drivers, including expertise in Bill of Material cost structures at multiple volume tiers.

  • Builds an accurate forward forecast for category price movements.

  • Reports on cost savings, supports procure-to-pay process improvements and negotiates working capital and cash improvements.

  • Provides periodic and ad hoc reports and forecasts on performance against plan.

Major challenges & complexities:

  • Lead concurrent projects across multiple manufacturing plants and obtain buy-in and collaboration from the functional leaders at the individual sites.

  • Navigate seamlessly throughout the organization (with functions such as Quality, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Research & Development) during the project lifecycle, fostering relationships with partners throughout the business to achieve project deliverables.

  • Build constructive relationships with internal stakeholders to understand their data, analytical and procurement needs.

  • Effectively liaise with multiple stakeholders having, at times, conflicting needs and priorities.

  • Develop supplier relationships in a way that encourages open dialogue and cooperating in identifying and implementing win-win situations that add value to both organizations.


  • Internal: Procurement Team; Functional Teams such as Finance, HR, IT, etc.; Site teams; Corporate Procurement team co-workers; Business Group procurement teams.

  • External: Suppliers; Industry Associations.


Knowledge & Experience:

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience in Packaging R&D, Operations, or related field.

  • Analytical depth and technical expertise in packaging materials, processes, systems and equipment interface.

  • Advanced understanding of technical drawings.

  • Preferred materials knowledge in flexible packaging films and secondary packaging technologies.

  • Working knowledge of purchasing processes and supplier quality systems.

  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma process improvement methodologies or similar.

  • Expertise / mastery in desktop analytical tools (excel, databases, tableau or equivalent).

  • SAP and/or other ERP systems experience as an advantage.

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's level degree in Engineering, Packaging, technical field or equivalent

  • Master's Degree as an advantage.


  • Provides leadership and ownership of the strategy for the packaging category.

  • Demonstrates excellent negotiation skills, problem-solving ability and strategy planning expertise.

  • Strong action/results orientation with the ability to work with minimal oversight, to be self-motivated and proactive in achieving individual/team objectives.

  • Proven ability to communicate, influence others and manage multiple resources

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to articulate views convincingly and influence internal clients and external suppliers

  • Demonstrated understanding of working in a complex environment and interaction with other functions and business groups
