Role Summary

Drug Safety Research & Development (DSRD) is seeking a leader to drive transformation that best leverages the balance of science, business process and digital solutions. The Scientific & Operational Effectiveness (SOE) Systems Enabling Process, Transformation & Continuous Improvement Lead Scientist fosters, inspires, and enables our DSRD colleagues to adopt new ways of working that accelerate our performance and Digital Strategy through optimized, simplified and sustainable processes, technologies and procedures.

Role Responsibilities

  • Establish a vision and strategy for prioritizing, implementing, and maintaining data-driven process improvements within DSRD

  • Ensure visibility and clarity of the organization's key scientific and business processes, data flow, data standards, analytical engines and pipelines

  • Facilitate the analysis of our key processes and engage our colleagues in identifying problems, unnecessary complexity and opportunities so that innovative and regulatory compliant solutions can be surfaced; recommend business and technical solutions to improve operational effectiveness.Create/ update process and data flow models

  • Eliminate unnecessary complexity in our work through streamlining our business processes and simplifying and leveraging technology

  • Identify risks and issues in scientific and business processes, data and systems

  • Utilize proven continuous improvement methods to pilot ideas, and deliver bottom line, quantified results

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement that will be achieved through team building, education/ coaching and enabling people to solve problems and bring forth ideas

  • Be an active and visible change agent, fostering a flexible and open mindset to new opportunities and continuous improvement

  • Collaborate with members of the Strategic Implementation Team and Pfizer Digital to help assess impact to processes, people, data integrity, and systems - before a project is endorsed

  • Collaborate across DSRD and WRD lines, working in strong partnership with our key stakeholders (e.g. Pfizer Digital, upstream/downstream Partner Lines)

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a preference in Science or Engineering related field

  • 12+ years' experience working within the pharmaceutical/ drug development R&D industry and/or related experience in these areas

  • A process design expert on cross-functional process design and modeling, facilitation of process mapping and implementation of new processes using innovative and effective methodologies

  • Solid understanding of available Lean/CI tools with demonstrated application experience (e.g. GE Workout, A3, Value Stream Mapping, Critical Path Method, Kaizen events, etc.)

  • Strong communicator, both verbal and written, with the ability to influence across functions and at all levels of an organization

  • Demonstrated organized and structured thinking and execution, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and adjust priorities as needed in order to meet deadlines, demonstrating a high level of independent judgment and proactivity

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and influence others, negotiate during situational conflict, and establish the best forward path in the face of competing points of view

  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact

  • Ability to present and communicate complex ideas clearly, succinctly and easily understandable to stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred

  • Continuous Improvement Education or Certification (Kaizen Facilitation, Lean, Six Sigma)

  • Data/ tech savvy would be a plus; be able to "speak" the digital language as well as the language of our customers

This role requires the ability to work on site and travel (10%-15%) to other DSRD sites: Groton, CT, Andover MA, Cambridge MA, La Jolla CA

VIEW JOBS 3/23/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-06-21T00:00 ROLE SUMMARY We are seeking a highly collaborative chemical engineer with knowledge in heterogeneous catalysis and heat and mass transfer to join Chemical Research and Development (CRD) in Groton. The successful candidate will support the development of our heterogeneous catalytic flow reactor platform for solid-liquid-gas applications. They will collaborate and partner with others to help us establish a suite of continuous technologies with proven application to enhance speed, quality and flexibility in API development and manufacturing from early candidate selection through to commercial application. CRD, as part of Worldwide R&D in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is responsible for the development of process technology for the production of API. CRD scientists engage in all facets of development from small scale synthesis in support of medicinal chemistry programs, to the development of the commercial synthetic route. CRD scientists partner with manufacturing specialists for API synthesis in kilo-lab and pilot plant facilities, as well as provide support for technology transfer to Pfizer manufacturing sites and third-party facilities. The successful candidate will join the Technology API group as a laboratory-based experimentalist. They will provide chemical engineering expertise for the development of continuous API platforms, workflows and processes. They will partner with chemists, analysts, mechanical engineers and chemical engineers from across Pfizer R&D and manufacturing organizations to assess existing continuous API platforms and design novel continuous API platforms for selected unit operations. They will prototype continuous API platforms through laboratory and plant application and progress successful platforms to modular and industry standardized units for manufacturing implementation. They will support the development of platforms and workflows to enable the delivery of integrated continuous unit operations for API development and manufacture, ensuring strong partnership with experts in PAT, automation and control. The ability to work on multi-disciplinary teams involving chemists, analysts, engineers, and technologists, and to represent CRD on cross-functional teams is essential. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES * Utilize knowledge of heat and mass transfer to develop a heterogeneous catalytic flow reactor platform and workflow and to impact other platforms being developed for flow chemistry * Partner with internal and external collaborators to design novel heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation and other liquid-solid-gas and liquid-solid transformations * Collaborate with CRD chemists and engineers to develop processes for pressure reactions in both batch and flow in support of the portfolio. * Apply chemical engineering principles and models (reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and mixing effects) to efficiently evaluate and develop scalable and robust processes for the manufacture of API using continuous technologies. * Partner with experts in process analytical technology, automation and control to enable the delivery of integrated continuous unit operations for API development and manufacture. * Working in a modern automated laboratory, performs laboratory experiments to develop process understanding using a One Factor at a Time (OFAT) and/or a Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology as appropriate. Performs experiments to understand reaction mechanisms and kinetics, stability, solvent exchange, etc. * Support technology transfer of API processes to internal Pfizer API manufacturing facilities and external suppliers. Serves as a key point of accountability for new product site registration and validation activities. May spend significant time at the PGS launch site supporting process validation and Pre-Approval Inspection (PAI) activities. Applies chemical engineering skills and specific process knowledge to understand and resolve scale-up issues during transfer. * Contributes to the preparation of a New Drug Application. Participates in data verification, PAI preparedness, and post submission query response, * Remains current with the process engineering and chemistry literature. Collaborates and prepares internal research reports and technical presentations. May collaborate and author external publications and present research at external conferences. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Required Education/Experience BS/MS Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years relevant chemical or pharmaceutical continuous platform and process development experience or PhD in Chemical Engineering. For a BS or MS chemist, the following experience is preferred; developing, scaling and transferring heterogeneous flow technologies; working in a fine chemical or API manufacturing facility with a good knowledge of continuous unit operations, and developing and applying modelling tools. Required Technical Skills A good understanding of the principles of heat and mass transfer in two and three phase heterogeneous catalysis. A good understanding of organic chemistry and chemical engineering principles. A good understanding of fundamental principles of continuous processing from a laboratory and manufacturing perspective. Familiarity with in-situ analytical tools (e.g FTIR, FBRM, and UV/Vis) and common analytical chemistry instrumentation including UPLC, HPLC, and MS. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Technical Skills Working knowledge of catalyst surface analysis techniques. A working knowledge of reaction modeling, material property prediction, and simulation using computational tools including: DynoChem, gPROMS, Visimix, Aspen, Fluent, and Cosmotherm. Working knowledge of application of in-situ analysis tools to process understanding including: FTIR, FBRM, and UV/Vis. Working knowledge of UPLC, MS, and NMR spectroscopy. Experience with tools such as MatLab or Labview and development of automation platforms. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to work in a laboratory environment performing experiments in a laboratory fume hood. Ability to perform complex data analysis.
