The Process Safety Manager reports to the Vice President, HSQE and is responsible for driving Enviva's proactive management of process related safety hazards. He/she will accomplish this by ensuring that all operating facilities have a current, documented Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and that corrective actions identified during the PHA are followed up on until completed and verified to be effective. The Process Safety Manager will also play a key role in managing changes to existing operations and processes to ensure that new hazards are not introduced to the system.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure that all operating facilities have a documented PHA that meets the requirements of OEMS 3.1 Risk ID and Assessment by:

  • Scheduling and managing logistics associated with conducting PHA's

  • Facilitating PHA's and ensuring the results are entered in OESuite

  • Following up on corrective actions from PHA to ensure they are completed and effective

  • Reviewing proposed Design and Engineering Standards in accordance with OEMS 4.1 to ensure that they appropriately address process safety risk

  • Verifying that proactive reliability strategies (predictive and preventive maintenance) strategies are in place for all critical equipment and engineering controls in accordance with OEMS 4.2

  • Verifying that Standard Operating Procedures are documented for all critical equipment and engineering controls in accordance with OEMS 4.5

  • Obtaining approval from the appropriate Approval Authority for unmitigated risks

  • Reporting to the OEMS Steering Committee on the status of PHA's and implementation of corrective actions

  • Reviewing high-risk Management of Change Requests in accordance with OEMS 6.1 to ensure that process related risks are mitigated prior to implementation of the chance

  • Participating in the Enterprise Project Management Process in accordance with OEMS 4.6 to ensure that process hazards introduced through capital projects are properly mitigated

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Operations, Engineering, H&S Management or similar degree

  • 5 years experience working in H&S roles in an industrial setting

  • Experience performing Process Hazard Analysis, Hazard and Operability studies, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, or other risk assessment and quantification methodologies.

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, regulatory requirements including 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 652 and 664

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Sharepoint

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects at the same time and be able to respond quickly to changing priorities

  • Desire to learn quickly and be challenged to take on higher levels of responsibility

  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and question leadership

  • High degree of professionalism and integrity

  • Willingness to confront team members and hold them accountable

  • Desire to receive constructive feedback from other team members

  • Willingness to travel up to 50%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Safety or Engineering related discipline

  • Specific training and or certification in risk assessment and quantification methodologies

  • Specific training and or certification on regulatory requirements including 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 652, and NFPA 664

  • Prior experience working in a Wood Products or other process based manufacturing company

  • Proficiency with database, project management, and reporting processes

  • Knowledge of advanced statistical analysis methodologies (i.e. hypothesis testing, regression, etc.).
