What will you do as a Process Safety Engineer?

This position oversees and implements the Process Safety Management/Risk Management program, with Health & Safety responsibilities, including Emergency Response Team for the US Southern Region. This position champions and promotes a strong SHEQ culture throughout the organization and drives continuous improvement efforts with a sense of urgency and in accordance with the regulatory imperative as well as Company values.

What do we expect from you as a Process Safety Engineer?

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, fire science, occupational health and safety, or related field preferred.

  • NFPA 1081 Industrial Fire Brigade Exterior and Interior Certifications.

  • NFPA 1041 Instructor I & II

  • NIMS 100, 200, 300 (400, 700, 800 Preferred as well)

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • CSP, CFPS Certification(s) a plus.

What does your day look like?

Your core responsibilities are:

  • Leads and directs the development, training, implementation, and monitoring of SHEQ policies, procedures, and programs; develops, implements, and complies with Company global SHEQ standards, practices, and applicable codes; maintains the continued quality of Company process systems; supports development, implementation, and measurement of SHEQ procedures, practices, projects, and recordkeeping.

  • Acts as the region's owner and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (PSM), Risk Management Plan, and Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA) requirements of the Region.

  • Ownership of the compliance elements of PSM Management is not limited to but includes the following: Leading PHAs, MOC Management, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) as needed and tracks recommendations.

  • Leads Facility Emergency Response Team, including training program development and compliance. Responds to emergencies as required (i.e., CIMA).

  • Oversight of the maintenance, procurement, and inspection of mobile fire suppression equipment, Including firefighting apparatus.

  • Participates in plant's safety and health policies and procedures by ensuring that all processes and modifications to existing processes have been critically reviewed for process safety, risk management, environmental, and general safety and health considerations in accordance with regulatory requirements (OSHA, PSM, and EPA RMP) and Company's Process Safety Standards.

  • Provides technical review of Management of Change (MOC) documents as needed.

  • Reviews Process Safety Event (PSE) information to determine severity in accordance with API 754 recommended practice.

  • Facilitates the Safety Committees and sub-committees including monthly and weekly Committee communication initiatives.

  • Owns and leads the contractor safety management program.

  • Manage the PPE program for the facility.

  • Support the sites for execution, maintenance, and updates of the Emergency Response Plan.

  • Manage the Industrial Hygiene Program for the locations including compliance with 29CFR 1910.1048 and other regulatory or company requirements.

  • Prepares and delivers presentations at SHEQ meetings; supports others by preparing reports/presentations pertaining to process safety, quality and risk management.

Work Environment

This position requires an employee to be in an office environment as well as exposed to outside elements. Most extreme elements are heat in the summer months of up to 100°+ and some exposure to cold of generally no less than 0° in the winter months. There will be exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous. The employee may enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments. Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location. General office noise may be experienced and louder sounds and vibrations when outside. All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, speak and hear. The employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; the employee may be required, on occasion, to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may be required to climb ladders/storage tanks up to 50' in height. The employee may be required to enter confined spaces. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employee may be required to travel by air, rail, bus, or car.
