Job Summary:

The Process Engineer is responsible for providing technical subject matter expert (SME) support to numerous functional groups for existing and newly proposed midstream gas/oil/water processing facilities, field gathering (i.e. compressor stations and booster pump stations), and pipeline operations. Expertise in process modeling simulation software and the ability to understand technical details of midstream operations from a field-wide (macro) level down to an equipment/instrument component (i.e. micro) level is essential. This position will be based out of The Woodlands, TX.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years' work experience in a natural gas industry engineering function (other experience levels will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).

  • 10+ years work experience in the midstream industry preferred.

  • Competency in at least one computer process simulation software package (Hysys, Unisim, ProMax, Symmetry, and/or Protreat). Proficiency in multiple software packages a plus.

  • Broad knowledge of technologies used in the natural gas processing and pipeline industry.

  • Experience in conducting process hazards analyses for new and modified facilities.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders (Commercial, Operations, HSSE, external engineering firms).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to handle stressful situations, multiple critical tasks occurring concurrently, and effectively manage priorities during critical deadline driven conditions.

  • Strong computer skills including ability to use Microsoft software applications (Excel, Word, Visio and PowerPoint) and learn other programs quickly.

  • Highly self-motivated and ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

  • Excellent technical writing skills, with experience writing plant operating procedures, design basis documents, process descriptions, and detailed technical specifications for equipment.

  • Expertise in creating and evaluating the following PSI documents/evaluations: BFDs, PFDs, HMBs, P&IDs, equipment lists, line lists, cause and effect diagrams, plot plans, control narratives, process calculations (hydraulics, equipment sizing, vessel sizing, PSV sizing), flare evaluations, etc.

  • Assertive in pursuing difficult issues and bringing them to a quick but thorough resolution.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform high level feasibility evaluations and process comparisons/selections to achieve the desired business unit goals for potential new commercial opportunities and to support the infrastructure planning team. This includes preparation of preliminary technical project scope, input to cost estimates, and preliminary schedule. If a third-party engineering firm is required to perform some or all these activities, the Process Engineer may help manage that work or at a minimum act as company SME for these studies.

  • Perform or support detailed design of the process, equipment, instrumentation, or relief system (i.e., PSV and flare) specifications required for plant facility expansions and modifications, working directly with execution (project manager) team members.

  • Act as a company SME to provide direction, oversight, and review of process engineering design performed by contract engineering firms.

  • Provide support for troubleshooting operational problems and debottlenecking existing plant facilities.

  • Support Operations and Operations Engineering teams to maintain facility availability, optimize, and ensure safe and reliable operations.

  • Work with Commercial, Engineering, and Operations teams to evaluate field and plant operations to enhance or improve business drivers (i.e. plant recoveries, OPEX, etc.).

  • Provides technical guidance/input to the HSSE-air team regarding new/existing permit modifications or other regulatory compliance issues.

  • Leads or contributes to the development of new (or modification of existing) company specific design standards, guidelines, and best practices.

  • Handle ad hoc requests from Operations, Commercial, Infrastructure Planning, Execution (project management and construction), Operations Engineering, HSSE and other groups which require expertise in the process engineering discipline.

  • Provide informal/formal mentoring of junior engineers and non-technical personnel in the technical areas of oil/gas/water Midstream systems and general process engineering.

  • Travels to field locations regularly as needed to support above activities and requires ability to move about industrial facilities, including the use of steps, ladders, and scaffolding in varying weather conditions.

  • Participates in external industry outreach including involvement in technical industry association committees (i.e. GPA Midstream, API, etc.) and/or development of publications/technical papers.

  • Interact with all levels inside the Company and with customers. Tasks often on fixed and tight deadlines for multiple, often simultaneous, projects.

Education:

A bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical Engineering is required. Other engineering disciplines may be considered with appropriate experience. Title and compensation will be based on experience level.

Certifications/Licenses:

Professional Engineering (PE) registration is a plus.

Travel Requirements:

Travel to field locations or other WES company office locations required (higher or lower for specific time periods depending on work tasks and projects. The percentage of travel required for this position is 10 - 25%.

Work Schedule:

This position will work 9 hours Monday - Thursday and 4 hours on Friday. This position will work in an office environment Mon, Tues, and Thurs and remotely on Wed and Fri.
