The Process Engineer is responsible for the API manufacturing processes and intermediates. They provide technical support for processes including performing analysis to measure process performance and implementing improvements in process cycle time, yield, and quality to maximize operations efficiency. They support the introduction and validation of new and existing products as well as provide guidance and insight to new equipment design, installation and qualification.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day support of assigned processes. Create and maintain documentation such as batch production records, operational procedures, criticality analysis, and key and controlled parameter documents.

  • Conduct or participate in improvement efforts by analysis and correction of both process and equipment problems to maintain or enhance existing site operations.

  • Responsible for process surveillance programs on issues such as process control, yields, cycle times, quality, and change over. Prepare written interpretations of plant operating data and implements corrective action.

  • Represent Technical Operations in local and API-SM cluster engineering projects and coordinate small engineering projects.

  • Prepare reports (campaign, monthly, or ad hoc) to keep management informed of work in progress with expected completion dates.

  • Conduct or participate in development projects including small scale or plant scale investigations to provide improved procedures, equipment or processes for existing products.

  • Lead and execute the process and cleaning validation of new and existing products.

  • Support the introduction of new processes by coordinating and executing the preparation activities for process start-ups and supply technical coverage.

  • Assist in new and existing process and equipment design.

  • Execute cost reduction and productivity improvement projects using Process or Design Excellence techniques.

  • Utilizes appropriate risk management tools such as FMEA, HAZOP, LOPA and business risk evaluations.

  • Conduct training for operations and maintenance personnel.

  • Maintain knowledge of cGMPs, process safety practices and environmental standards.

Additional position requirements:

  • Serve in the role of a Synthesis Expert / Owner or System (equipment) Owner.

  • Mentor, and assist in the development of peers, co-op students and interns.

  • Produce high quality and accurate work in a timely manner to meet the production schedule.

  • Lead and coordinate multiple projects priorities and works effectively across the organization in completing projects on time and in budget.

  • Involvement with PLC's, DCS/BPCS will vary by plant - these systems are tools used by the Process Engineer to accomplish the job responsibilities.

  • Participate in plant safety programs such as PHAs/LOPAs of new and existing processes to maintain and/or improve operational safety.

  • Serve on various committees and teams to enhance operations at the Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. plant site, Georgia campus and API-SM cluster as requested by supervision.

  • Assist in the preparation for, and detailing with various regulatory agency audits (i.e., FDA inspections, Corporate QA audits, in-house QA audits). Assists in keeping regulatory documentation current.

  • Carry out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines including FDA, EPA, OSHA and DEA. Maintain compliance with all company and site policies and procedures and the intent of our Credo.

  • Assume responsibility for the safety, environmental, quality, and business effects of personal work and of work performed as a team.

  • Successfully complete regulatory and job training requirements.

  • Maintain proper housekeeping at all times.

  • Be available for overtime work on a scheduled or emergency basis. Travel may be necessary.

  • Other projects or assignments as requested by management.


  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry; generally, required.

  • A minimum of two years of related experience is required.

  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment is highly preferred.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents is required.

  • Ability to respond to sensitive inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community is required.

  • Ability to effectively present information to site management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Must be able to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.

  • Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

  • Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form is required.

  • Define problems, collect information, establish facts and data driven conclusions is required.

  • Must be able to work effectively with other colleagues and with minimal supervision.

  • Experience leading and coordinating multiple project priorities is preferred.

  • Computer knowledge, primarily Microsoft Word and Excel, Minitab and Visio is preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger or feel and reach with hands and arms.

  • Ability to qualify for respiratory protection use is preferred.

  • Capability of moving around the plant to perform on-site investigations is required.

  • Experience using data science and/or data analytics for process improvement and troubleshooting is preferred.

The primary focus of this engineer will be developing and maintaining the processes, infrastructure, and programming necessary to successfully execute machining operations for Mini-Hydraulic Excavator (MHE's) and Small Track-Type Tractor (STTT's) fabrications. It is necessary for the successful candidate to have a deep understanding of CNC tooling, machining, and CNC programming. Machining operations for our structures are executed using large horizontal and gantry style machining centers with hydraulic workholding. Our primary machining operations are (but not limited to) boring, reaming, drilling, tapping, and face milling. Prior experience machining welded structures is also a desired skill. This position will also have responsibility identifying and commissioning new equipment to be used in our machining operations. Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: * Perform technical analysis of manufacturing processes to support management decisions * Develop capital forecast as it relates to new product introduction, product capacity increases, machine replacement, and process continuous improvement * Development of new CNC programs using a combination of EIA and CAM programming * Writing of in-process inspection routines using Renishaw machine tool probes and macros * Design, build, deploy, and maintain all tooling and equipment necessary for the machining of MHE and STTT structures * Develop, document, and maintain the processes necessary to meet product design requirement while ensuring operator safety and achievement of quality goals * Validate function and/or dimensions of tooling, machines, and parts for continued process conformance * Develop and validate process cycle times by conducting time studies * Monitor process performance and quality by analyzing dimensional, OEE, process capability, and scrap/rework reports. * Troubleshoot day-to-day process issues, develop solutions, and monitor improvements * Respond to customer issues and lead process improvements * Collaborate with the product engineering, operations, and quality groups to improve product quality and manufacturability * Perform process improvement activities to reduce material and machining cost * Review NPI concepts, prints, and change notices for manufacturability * Provide cross shift support as necessary to support production Basic Qualifications: * BS Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology with 5 years of engineering responsibility for CNC machining, or no degree plus 10 years of engineering responsibility for CNC machining * Experience with 3D CAD systems (Creo, Solidworks, or Inventor) * Experience in creating, modifying, and troubleshooting EIA NC code * Experience in CAM software (preferably Esprit) * Ability to work independently in Microsoft Office 365 applications Top Candidates Will Also Have: * Experience with the machining of large, welded structures * CNC machining experience (preferably in milling/boring/reaming applications) with low carbon steel (ASTM A36 equivalent) * The ability to optimize machining processes through proper tool selection and setup * Experience in designing proper work holding solutions to ensure parts are secure during the machining process * Experience integrating Renishaw probe routines into CNC programs * Experience balancing process cycle times and tool cost through the optimization of speeds and feeds * Experience collaborating with design engineering to ensure parts are designed for manufacturing * Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) * Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings Relocation assistance is not available for this position Your Work Shapes the World Whether it be groundbreaking products, best in class solutions or creating a lifelong career, you can do the work that matters at Caterpillar.
