Zymergen is hiring an experienced Process Development Engineer to support conceiving, developing and transferring production processes utilizing solid-state fermentation to commercial scale. As a member of the Process Development & Scale Up team, the incumbent will support fermentation process development at bench and pilot scale, transfer fermentation processes between Zymergen and partner sites, and support successful implementation of production fermentation processes at commercial scale.
An ideal candidate for this position will perform the following duties:
Conduct solid-state fermentation process development at pilot/bench scale, working together with Zymergen and partner development teams, and utilizing lab and pilot resources at Zymergen and partner sites.
Conduct transfer of fermentation processes to pilot and commercial scale and support initial production
Interface with bench fermentation research team to support commercially-scalable process definition and development
Support fermentation process testing and interface with technical staff at partner facilities
Support development of Techno-Economic and Process Models
Strain development and bench fermentation research are based at Zymergen's facility in Emeryville, while pilot and developmental facilities for this work will be located in the US Mid-West region. The incumbent will spend significant time at each site - up to 50% travel.
We favor candidates with the following:
BS to PhD in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or relevant field and 5 years of industry experience
Demonstrated experience in leading and/or executing fermentation processes development at pilot scale
Demonstrated experience in scaling fermentation processes from lab into pilot and operational commercial scale facilities, including performing on-site support
Familiarity with pilot and plant scale seed-train and fermentation equipment and process sterility
Familiarity with bench scale fermentation equipment and operation
Experience interfacing with bench fermentation development teams
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in collaborative cross functional team environments, both internally and with partners
Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics and control charts to monitor and analyze results
Experience with solid-state fermentation is a plus
Experience building and utilizing Techno-Economic Analyses is a plus
