Zymergen is hiring an experienced Process Development Engineer to support conceiving, developing and transferring production processes utilizing solid-state fermentation to commercial scale. As a member of the Process Development & Scale Up team, the incumbent will support fermentation process development at bench and pilot scale, transfer fermentation processes between Zymergen and partner sites, and support successful implementation of production fermentation processes at commercial scale.

An ideal candidate for this position will perform the following duties:

  • Conduct solid-state fermentation process development at pilot/bench scale, working together with Zymergen and partner development teams, and utilizing lab and pilot resources at Zymergen and partner sites.

  • Conduct transfer of fermentation processes to pilot and commercial scale and support initial production

  • Interface with bench fermentation research team to support commercially-scalable process definition and development

  • Support fermentation process testing and interface with technical staff at partner facilities

  • Support development of Techno-Economic and Process Models

Strain development and bench fermentation research are based at Zymergen's facility in Emeryville, while pilot and developmental facilities for this work will be located in the US Mid-West region. The incumbent will spend significant time at each site - up to 50% travel.

Qualifications/Experience

We favor candidates with the following:

  • BS to PhD in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or relevant field and 5 years of industry experience

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and/or executing fermentation processes development at pilot scale

  • Demonstrated experience in scaling fermentation processes from lab into pilot and operational commercial scale facilities, including performing on-site support

  • Familiarity with pilot and plant scale seed-train and fermentation equipment and process sterility

  • Familiarity with bench scale fermentation equipment and operation

  • Experience interfacing with bench fermentation development teams

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in collaborative cross functional team environments, both internally and with partners

  • Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics and control charts to monitor and analyze results

  • Experience with solid-state fermentation is a plus

  • Experience building and utilizing Techno-Economic Analyses is a plus

VIEW JOBS 4/3/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-02T00:00 Job Description and Specific Responsibilities Zymergen is hiring Research Associates into the NPI (New Product Introduction) team to develop and improve high throughput screening and fermentation workflows. These experienced associates are required to be able to identify and implement improvements in existing processes and establish protocols for new programs. Typical responsibilities will include: * DOE and experimental planning * Design and execution of experiments with complex media in crossed and nested designs * Preparation of reagents, set-up, performance, and turn-around of micro-scale fermentations * Operation of multiple types of robotic systems, including liquid handlers, colony pickers, and automated plate readers * Development of assays to assess various aspects of the micro fermentation process * Collect, collate and analyze (statistical and other) data from high throughput strain screening The successful candidate will conduct research experiments to develop microscale fermentation processes and assess the different aspects of the process. The associate will need to be able to quickly learn the information management systems and statistical packages used at Zymergen. This Research Associate will be part of the team establishing methods for testing and screening engineered strains in high-throughput. Must Haves: * Experience in areas such as biology, biochemistry, biological engineering, and chemical engineering with 4+ years of relevant industrial and independent research or MS with 2+ years of relevant industrial and independent research. * A strong understanding of cellular physiology to troubleshoot and improve existing cultivation models. Experience with a variety of microbes and a variety of growth processes is desired. * Experience in Fermentation and Bioprocessing. * Experience with a variety of fermentation products (proteins, small molecules) * Experience with programming, familiarity with statistical concepts, or experience with statistical packages such as JMP, R or, SPSS * A proven track record in identifying and implementing process improvements * Capable of analyzing and interpreting data and presenting results and conclusions to a project team Preferred skills: * Plate-based assays * Experience using lab automation (Beckman, Tecan, etc.) to enable complicated or high-throughput protocols * Experience with SQL and/or Python code Previous experience in the field of synthetic biology is not essential.
