Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Process Design Engineer to join our Inert Gas System team. In this role, you will be immersed in a collaborative environment to contribute to the design, optimization, and documentation of the Inert Gas System for Kairos Power's first low-power demonstration reactor, future commercial units, and related test systems. This position will allow you to make meaningful contributions within a multi-disciplinary team that is driving innovation in the field of advanced nuclear energy.

Responsibilities

  • Produce engineering calculations and reports for sizing of process equipment and instruments (vessels, heat exchangers, control valves, relief valves, compressors, blowers, etc.)

  • Collaborate closely with our internal procurement team and external vendors to identify potential components that align with system requirements

  • Lead the Request for Quotation (RFQ) process, systematically comparing proposed solutions, and thoroughly reviewing datasheets, drawings, and documentation

  • Actively engage in fielding vendor Requests for Information (RFIs), addressing inquiries effectively to ensure a comprehensive understanding of product offerings

  • Review and redline piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and process flow diagrams (PFDs) to appropriately represent system design

  • Develop and document system design, modes of operation, required controls and interlocks, and maintenance plans for full plant life cycle

  • Interface with Mechanical Design, Structural, Instrumentation & Controls, Operations, and other Process Design Engineers to ensure designs meet plant needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline

  • 7+ years of relevant industry experience in refining, chemical, or power generation process design engineering (or equivalent industry)

  • Proficient in interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and process equipment datasheets

  • Experience working directly with external vendors to design and deliver process equipment

  • Knowledge of HazOp process and demonstrated experience designing with a safety-first mindset to create robust systems

  • Knowledge of process simulation and/or hydraulic simulation software (Aspen Plus, Pro/II, Hysys, AFT Fathom/Arrow, SiNet, Apros, etc.)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated capacity for autonomous problem-solving

  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently

  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others

  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge

  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

Travel

  • Some travel may be required (up to 20%)

  • Requires schedule flexibility

  • Occasionally requires non-standard work-week hours

  • Occasionally requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines

The salary range for this position is $116,400 to $137,000 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
