Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Process Instrumentation & Controls Engineer who will be working with a team who is be responsible for developing the process control narrative and subsequent control philosophy of the Kairos Power molten salt and nuclear systems. In this role, you will contribute to the development programs for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). The ideal candidate has cross-discipline competence, with an understanding of both process design and control design. The successful candidate in this role will have a direct impact on the productivity of the Instrumentation Controls & Electrical Team and of the broader Kairos Power organization.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to read and interpret Process Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

  • Coordinate process controls design with process engineers

  • Document process controls narratives

  • Form Instrument and IO lists based on P&ID's using smart plant systems

  • Design heater controls for large scale facilities

  • Heater sizing analysis for controllability

  • Specify instrumentation for process controls

  • Communicate with suppliers for instrumentation procurement

  • Design optimal control strategies including and not limited to model predictive control

  • Work through different stages of controls from concept to design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and testing

  • Programming may be required from time to time

  • Perform and supervise installation and test of instrumentation and controls systems

  • Provide technical leadership on complex instrumentation projects that bridge multiple engineering disciplines

  • Interpret technical challenges related to Engineering Test and recommend solutions and best practices

  • Solve complex problems using a broad perspective to identify solutions

  • Guide others in resolving complex issues regarding data acquisition, instrumentation, and control of industrial processes

  • Maintain a personal focus to execute on Process Instrumentation and Controls

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or similar discipline.

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in process controls is required

  • Experience with nuclear I&C systems is an advantage

  • Ability to make strategic decisions

  • Ability to manage complex problems

  • Ability to obtain a Electrical Engineering (EE) Professional Engineering License

  • Experience with heater controls

  • Experience creating electrical and controls schematics is a plus

  • Knowledge of industrial protocols is a plus

  • Knowledge of industrial networking is a plus

  • Experience with controller programming is a plus

  • Understanding of technical fundamentals of sensors for measuring: temperature, pressure, flow, force, torque, displacement, fluid flow, pressure, temperature, motor position, motor speed, etc.

  • CAD experience preferred (AutoCad is a bonus)

  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team

  • Ability to problem solve quickly and efficiently

  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge

  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues

  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others

Physical Conditions

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like

  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods

  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another

Environmental Conditions

  • General office environment

  • Noisy environments

  • High-concentration, demanding and fast-paced

Travel

  • Up to 20% travel is required

The salary range for this position is $88,100 to $103,600 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
