Howard University Hospital seeks to hire a Full-Time Evenings Procedure Support Technician in Operating Rooms who will embrace our rich and historic tradition of excellence. This position is Full-Time Nights, M-F, five 8-hour shifts per week from 0300a-1100a, weekend rotation required.

The Procedure Support Technician assists with the quick and efficient set-up and turnover of cases in each surgical suite by cleaning the operating rooms and equipment and interacting with clinical nurses, technicians, and physicians to expedite the set-up and turnover of surgical cases.

The Procedure Support Technician:

Cleans all surgical equipment before and after each surgical case or before bringing it into the OR.
Performs patient skin shave preps, as requested following physician orders and hospital procedures with patient privacy and minimal skin nicks.
Assembles equipment daily to clean rooms and remove trash, preparing mops and wet vac cleaning solutions.
Bags and removes trash from each operating room and places trash on the transport cart. Transports trash to incinerator. Remove soiled linen from each operating room and place them on the transport cart. Washes operating room table, buckets, walls, and other furniture and performs appropriate floor care after each procedure. Ensures OR beds are cleaned and linen replaced. Wipes surgical lights as needed.
Cleans each operating room daily. (See special procedure for each terminal cleaning).
Takes transport cart to designated area, removes trash, linen, and instruments, and returns to respective areas.
Replace plastic bags on transport carts.
Empties wet vac and change mop head and cleaning solution after cleaning room and removes used scrub brushes and nail cleaners from scrub sinks.
Empties kick buckets in scrub areas and wash as necessary.
Replace with clean bags/liners.
Cleans bathrooms, including all fixtures, and keeps toilets supplied with paper towels, soap, and toilet paper.
Checks scrub areas frequently for general cleanliness and removes excess water from floors.
Checks lounge area frequently for general cleanliness performs floor care, replacing hamper bags, collecting soiled scrub suits, and cleaning sinks.
Performs appropriate floor care to corridors daily and as needed.
Dust cabinets and locker frequently.
Cleans patient dressing area and offices daily and gas room, x-ray, and anesthesia rooms weekly, or as needed.
Vacuum rugs in waiting rooms daily and change curtains in pre-post-op weekly and as requested.
Ensures adequate supplies in the supply room, keeping the supply room neat. Restock supplies in assigned rooms.
Prepares stretchers for patient transport.
Transports patients to and from the OR, holding area, and various diagnostic and therapeutic areas. Assist in transportation of equipment and supplies to and from rooms and ensure proper handling and storage.
Helps patients into and out of wheelchairs and onto stretchers. Assists with patient transfer to and from the operating table. Assists in positioning patients and holding limbs for surgical prep as directed.
Assures that continuous performance improvement principles are practiced in concert with daily work and future planning.
Consistently follows principles of First Impressions in all interactions with staff, physicians, visitors, and the general public.
Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

Required Skills:

Ability to understand basic aseptic techniques and environmental controls.
Ability to understand work hazards and be familiar with fire and safety regulations.
Ability to assist in the quick and efficient set-up and turnover of cases in surgical suites according to the department and the Hospitals policies and procedures.
Ability to clean operating rooms according to procedures daily.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and respect patient privacy.
Ability to operate basic cleaning equipment.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with staff, patients and their families, physicians, other medical care providers, Hospital and University Officials, and the general public.
Ability to understand basic aseptic techniques and environmental controls.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with staff, patients, physicians, and the general public.
Competence in both oral and written English.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High school or GED equivalent
6 months experience in housekeeping and/or janitorial work in a hospital facility
BLS through the American Heart Association
Operating Room experience preferred
