Applications from this process will be reviewed in two phases.

Phase I : Fully Certified Applicants - only fully certified applicants  will be selected.

Phase II: Recruit Academy - candidates with no prior experience.

Fully certified personnel/Lateral transfers already enrolled in PERF will be given preference and selected ahead of all other candidates for the first round of hiring from this application process.

Fully certified personnel MUST have current certifications in all of the following:

  •    Firefighter I / II (IFSAC, ProBoard, or Indiana)
  •    Hazardous Materials Awareness (IFSAC, ProBoard, or Indiana)
  •    Hazardous Materials Operations (IFSAC, ProBoard, or Indiana)
  •    NIMS 100
  •    NIMS 200
  •    NIMS 700
  •    NIMS 800
  •    Emergency Medical Technician (National Registry or Indiana)

Candidates with no prior experience will be considered for the next Recruit Academy as a result of the second round of hiring from this application process.

Description

Performs a wide variety of administrative and technical tasks and functions in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, extrication, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, and other emergency operations for the Fire Department.

Essential (primary)

Provides appropriate services in response to emergency calls, including emergency and aerial rescue, medical services, extrication, hazardous materials operations and fire suppression. Prepares reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.

Operates, inspects, repairs and performs other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment in the Fire Department.

Operates numerous types of rescue, emergency and fire suppression equipment as necessary.

Cleans and maintains station facilities, grounds, equipment and apparatus. Ensures that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.

Participates in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including training, fire investigations and equipment operation and maintenance.

Studies street, hydrant and apartment locations in assigned district. Studies building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned district.

Maintains regular and frequent training in all areas of fire suppression, prevention, emergency medical techniques, hazardous materials response, and other operations and activities of department.

Non-Essential (secondary)

Inputs, reviews and accesses records, information and other various data on the computer.

Provides tours of assigned fire station, demonstrates fire equipment and apparatus, and participates in other educational programs for various groups and the general public.

Perform other duties assigned.

At The Time of Application

Must be at least 18 years of age and not more than 40 years of age, or less than 40 years and six months if the applicant is a retired veteran with 20 years of armed forces service, at the time of appointment.

Must be a high school graduate (G.E.D. is acceptable).

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Must successfully pass a written test and physical ability (CPAT) test.

All qualified applicants will be given an opportunity to test. You must provide a valid email address to receive the invitation to schedule your test date. All applicants that pass the written test will be granted an interview. You MUST have a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card at the time of your interview.

Must be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.

Must submit to an oral interview before a Hiring Board for the purpose of determining the applicant's ability to communicate, their individual experience, and relevant background information.

EMT certification is preferred but not required.

Employment Requirements

Successful applicants must pass a psychological screening and physical examination performed by a licensed physician, chosen by the Pension Board.

Be accepted into the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Retirement Fund.

Must be able to successfully pass Firefighter I/II, Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) Hazardous Materials Awareness / Operations, Technical Rescue Awareness, NIMS (100, 200, 700, 800), and TEEX AWR 111, 160 (Weapons of Mass Destruction) during City of Bloomington Recruit School.

Must meet and maintain the standards of the Bloomington Fire Department throughout employment.

Frequently (33-66% of shift, 100-500 repetitions) stands, walks, and handles something. Occasionally (up to 33% of shift and 100 repetitions)  lifts or carries 75-150 pounds, climbs, balances, bends, kneels, crawls, reaches, squats, and sits. Infrequently pushes or pulls up to 175 pounds.

Incumbent is exposed to the following: hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high workplaces, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, natural and man-made disasters

Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including city and other government officials, community groups and the general public.
