These technicians must follow guidelines for sterilization exactly since most medical equipment must be completely decontaminated before use. Often, they also are responsible for maintaining necessary supply levels in sterile storage areas. Other day-to-day duties of sterile processing technicians can include:

  • Operating and monitoring steam autoclaves, sonic washers, and other sterilizing equipment

  • Cleaning sterilizing equipment

  • Organizing surgical instrument trays

  • Recording sterilizer test results

  • Stocking and inventorying crash carts

Position Responsibilities:

The Sterile Processing Technician cares for and maintains all surgical instrumentation and sets up supplies and instruments for surgery cases.

Required Skills

  • Must be a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • 2-3 years experience as Instrument Room Technician.

  • Experience with all types of sterilizers.

  • Knows operating room instrumentation.

  • Organized in setting up operating room instrument tray.

  • Understands operation of steam/ gravity sterilizer.

  • Understands Sterrad sterilizers.

  • Ability to prepare reports and keep records.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and departmental supply items is required.

Responsibilities The Sterile Processing Technician provides a key service WellStar to ensure equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards. The individual in this role must be skilled in following protocols with a high level of attention to detail. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties. He she is responsible for handling, properly processing and storing crucial medical instruments. He/she is responsible for sterilizer equipment monitoring for adhearance to performance specificaltions, including inspection and documentation. He/she prepares packs of supplies, linens, and instruments in Central Sterile Supply or Materials Management as directed. Qualifications Required Minimum Education * High school graduate or equivalent. Basic computer skills are required. Graduate of an accredited sterile processing/central service curriculum desired. Required Minimum Certification * Professional certification in sterile processing/central supply desired must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment.Certifications outline below are preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment. CRCST-Certified Registered Central Service Technician (IAHCS) CSPDT-Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD) Required Minimum Experience * Two years of central supply/sterile processing experience OR a graduate from an accredited sterile processing/central service program preferred. Required Minimum Skills * Must be able to retain knowledge of identification and necessary handling requirements of surgical instruments and medical supplies and equipment.
