As the Principal Scientist, T cell group, Janssen Immuno-Oncology Discovery, you will play a key role in driving Janssen's pre-clinical research efforts directed towards the discovery and advancement of novel T cell therapies (CAR-T and TCR-T) across multiple areas of disease focus.

You will:

  • Lead efforts to identify and advance novel T cell therapeutics (CAR-T and TCR-T) for Oncology

  • Drive multiple Discovery programs in parallel

  • Develop and/or implement strategies for next generation platforms and technologies

  • Lead and mentor teams of PhD and non PhD scientists

  • Work closely with Immuno-Oncology leadership team to define strategy and deliver robust portfolio of new therapeutics

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across multiple groups in Discovery and across functional areas

  • Identify novel platforms and external opportunities and engage key opinion leaders across T cell therapy space for input and collaborations

  • Represent company at meetings and to potential external collaborators

  • Present and assemble complex data sets

  • Minimum of a Ph.D is required

  • A minimum of 3 years post-doctoral training is preferred

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in biopharmaceutical setting is required

  • Established strong publication and track record in the T cell therapy space highly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple Discovery Programs in biopharmaceutical setting is required.

  • Ability to effectively manage and mentor a large scientific team(s), with prior direct and/or indirect people management experience is also required

  • Ability to present and assemble complex data sets is required

  • Ability to lead teams and interact in a matrix environment is required

Janssen Research & Development, LLC, is seeking an experienced,highly skilled, and motivated medicinal chemist to work in our laboratories inSpring House, PA, for the position of Principal Scientist, Oncology &Discovery Chemistry. This position willrequire the candidate to possess and leverage deep knowledge and capabilitiesto deliver differentiated clinical candidates to the Janssen productdevelopment pipeline within our Disease and Pathway Area Stronghold (DAS andPAS) strategy. Using a mix of internaland external resources, the Principal Scientist will partner with keystakeholders in the Oncology Therapeutic Area and other internal groups,represent medicinal chemistry and lead cross-functional project teams, and beco-responsible for building, managing, and delivering high quality clinicalmolecules into the Oncology pipeline. Responsibilities of the PrincipalScientist will include: * As project leader,drive and direct medicinal chemistry functions for one or more oncology drugdiscovery projects, working in concert with partners in molecular and cellularbiology, pharmacology, computational chemistry, ADME, structural biology,chemical development, and other key functions * Analyze screeningdata, perform literature reviews, design, propose, and execute medicinalchemistry plans, coordinate chemistry and biology data to support compoundprogression and patent strategies * Supervise anddirect synthetic chemistry activities internally and/or at contract researchorganizations (CROs) * Participate inportfolio and stage-gate reviews, lead the preparation and presentation ofdossiers for clinical candidate nomination and compound advancement * Participate inshaping and implementing strategies that support medicinal chemistry growthobjectives at Janssen * Serve as ascientific expert in medicinal chemistry with both internal and externalpartners and provide recommendations regarding new targets and emergingexternal opportunities. * Ensure optimalinteraction/communication and provide updates on project status to OncologyDiscovery leadership * Maintain significant personal laboratory presence Qualifications * Master's degree in synthetic or medicinal chemistry with 12 years ofrelated experience OR a PhD in synthetic or medicinal chemistry with 7 years of relatedexperience is required * Postdoctoral experienceis preferred * A minimum of 7 years'experience in the biopharmaceutical industry with a proven track record ofinnovative projects and key contributions to clinical candidate selection,preferably as project leader is required * Broad experience and proven accomplishments in medicinalchemistry, preferably Oncology, with operational skills for managing discoveryprograms at the level of a senior chemist/team leader and a proven track recordof delivering clinical candidates is required * Expert knowledge of modern methods of synthetic andmedicinal chemistry with ability to successfully and simultaneously conductmedicinal chemistry on multiple projects is required * Solid understanding of cellular/molecular biology,biochemistry, disease pharmacology, mechanisms of drug metabolism and moleculartoxicology, pharmaco-kinetic and pharmaco-dynamic sciences, and formulationsfor the in vivo evaluation of drugcandidates is required * Thorough understanding of DNA-encoded library technologies andprotein target degradation strategies is preferred * Experience with computational chemistry methods and biophysicaltechniques such as X-ray crystallography and macromolecular NMR is required * Ability to integratemultiple R&D disciplines into a successful strategic project plan isrequired * Strongproblem-solving skills for developing creative, innovative solutions, andmeeting project objectives are required * Demonstratedinfluence, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the abilityto succeed within a matrix environment are required * Experience in managing project budgets, aligning actionswith overall strategy, and supporting business cases for decision-making is preferred * Strong track record ofscientific contributions including peer reviewed first-author publications,patent applications, and presentations at major national meetings is required * Maintaining a labpresence and spending up to 30% of time in the lab is required * Up to 10% travel bothdomestically and internationally is required Primary Location United States-Pennsylvania-Spring House- Organization Janssen Research & Development, LLC.
