Pfenex Drug Discovery Team is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, highly motivated drug hunter to contribute to preclinical research and drug discovery. The successful candidate will be a strategic member of a fast-paced and collaborative research group in discovering novel targets and leading preclinical research projects. The ideal candidate will contribute at the laboratory bench and manage 1-3 research scientists to drive Pfenex's preclinical research projects to IND stage.


  • Leads hematologic malignancies drug discovery projects from early discovery to IND stage

  • Plans, designs, executes and troubleshooting of experiments to validate and to uncover novel biology of druggable targets

  • Performs experiments to identify lead molecules using cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry techniques such as, but not limited to transfection, Western Blot, qPCR, ELISA, MSD, multi-color flow cytometry, protein expression and purification

  • Leads research scientists and associates to perform routine assays to support lead identification and optimization

  • Presents findings clearly and concisely to research teams to drive direction of drug discovery projects

  • Mentors and trains junior research scientists and associates


  • PhD in Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or related field in Biomedical Sciences

  • Minimum 5+ years of biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience is required

  • Demonstrated project leadership and contributions to R&D efforts that have led to the development of clinical candidates

  • Proficiency in protein expression and purification, cell-based in vitro assays, and a deep understanding of In Vivo pharmacology is required

  • Experience with primary cell culture, human or/and rodent blood is a plus

  • Have a broad experience in cellular and biological techniques including but not limited to Western Blot, qPCR, multi-color flow cytometry, MSD, HTRF, luminescence, confocal microscopy, live cell imaging

  • Experience in developing and optimizing cell-based assays using various assay platforms is required

  • Experience with liquid handling automation is desired

  • Extensive publication record in high-impact journal is desired

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, FlowJo, and GraphPad Prism; WinNonlin is a plus

  • Excellent organizational skills, able to multi-task and excited for hand-on laboratory research

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must be a team player and perform at a high level in a matrixed drug discovery environment

  • Ability to train/ educate others

  • Level will be commensurate with experience
