Position Summary:

The Lead UX Software Engineer is responsible for leading the design and helping build the user interface for Lyells Data and Analytics Platform, based in South San Francisco or Seattle.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead code reviews and mentor front-end engineers building Lyells Data Platform
  • Partner closely with key stakeholders (internal and external scientists) to understand user, data, and business requirements
  • Develop the user interface design of Lyells Data Platform, to ensure the interface is intuitive, user-friendly, enabling, and powerful
  • Lead architecting and building the front-end
  • Work collaboratively with the other engineer to design APIs for the data and analytics services
  • Design and build interfaces to simplify and speed up capture of sample metadata in the labs
  • Integrate commercial, open-source, and custom build analysis tools
  • Enable large scale querying of data, as well as multi-modal analyses
  • Ensure diverse datasets are easily searchable and accessible to scientists
  • Promote culture of implementing high quality, scalable software with maximal impact for end-users

Requirements

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Degree (B.S., M.S. or PhD) in Computer Science, Math, Physics, or biological sciences is preferred, but not required
  • 5-10 years as technical lead for building user interfaces for data and analytics software
  • Extensive experience with modern Javascript frameworks, especially React/Redux
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines for front-end code
  • Ability to communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In addition to expertise and experience in software development and analytics, a background in biological science is desired
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively among cross-functional teams, with a particular understanding for and drive to solve data issues faced by research and clinical scientists
  • Ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet deadlines and balance competing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical skills and scientific/technical expertise
