Position Summary:

We are looking for a Principal Technical Writer who is is a recognized subject matter expert in product knowledge and technical understanding, and has the ability to learn new technology quickly. Works with SMEs across the different disciplines to define customer needs and required deliverables. The Principal Technical Writer assists management in project planning, and project execution. Along with management and the content strategist they identify what deliverables are required, design of the deliverables, and what delivery mechanism is appropriate. The Principal Technical Writer mentors other members of the Technical Communication staff. The Principal Technical Writer is a key member of the Technical Communication organization because of their product knowledge, superior writing skills, technical expertise, and leadership skills.

The Technical Communication team works with the software engineers, Subject Matter Experts, UX design team, and other stakeholders to write product documentation that can be included in guides, online help, and other delivery types. This position provides the opportunity to utilize your writing abilities and project management skills using the latest tools and methods to create and publish customer facing content. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Be a technical subject matter expert in several product areas

  • Provide technical support, guidance, and expertise for team members and internal partners

  • Assist team members to develop product knowledge and best practices

  • Mentor all members of the technical communication group on the complex technical aspects of F5 products and the interaction between products

  • Create technical product content

  • Partner with technical communication management leaders and cross functional project stakeholders to develop strategies that improve the user experience and provide the best deliverables to our customers

  • Identify and project plan for business needs and produce deliverables

  • Manage and lead projects from design to release ready

  • Interview subject matter experts and apply product expertise to create and deliver content

  • Provide innovation and creativity in producing technical content

  • Work in a team or independently on multiple projects

  • Lead a team on content projects

  • Attend feature requirement meetings and provide writing level of effort

  • Participate in cross functional planning meetings

  • Use department standards, styles, processes, and methods when performing all tasks

  • Provide updates to managers, project partners and team members as needed

  • Be proficient in the use of technical communication tools used to create content

  • Participate in internal and external training programs

  • Organize and facilitate content review process

  • Responsible for upholding F5's Business Code of Ethics and for promptly reporting violations of the Code or other company policies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Ability to plan for future customer and product needs using innovation and advance product knowledge

  • Expert experience with industry standard writing and publishing technologies and practices such as XML, Topic Based Authoring, etc

  • Highly-developed communication skills

  • Exceptional writing skills

  • Ability to establish successful relationships across a variety of disciplines

  • Ability to work and meet deadlines independently

  • Ability to work, partner, and brief senior leadership

  • Experience working in a security or networking organization a plus

  • Ability to act as a leader on the Technical Writing Team

  • Ability to identify and project plan for business needs

  • Duties are performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table.

  • Job may require working outside normal business hours (evenings and weekends).

  • Duties require the ability to utilize a computer, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material.


  • BA or BS degree in Technical Publications, English, or related degree

  • Eight or more years in technical content creation

  • Five or more years working in the tech field

  • History of increasing responsibility in previous positions

The function will require close interaction with employees to obtain a buy-in on written technical documents prior to them being published. Prior experience in a similar function is required as little training is expected to be provided. This role would be 75% technical writing but also 25% off loading of troubleshooting and ticketing on a day to day basis. This position will be needed for approximately 3 months.
