AWS Relational Database Service is one of the fastest-growing AWS businesses, providing automated relational database management in the cloud, with high availability and durability. Customers can set up a new database with just a few clicks, and complex administrative tasks like scaling, fail-over, and monitoring are all automatically handled by our control systems.

Amazon RDS Open Source is an exciting area of innovation for AWS, where customer could pick their choice of Open Source Relational Database engine and run it in cloud, and be completely hands off. We are helping customers have performance, availability and durability, with managed benefits of RDS. At Amazon/AWS, we take databases to their limits. Due to our scale, we see issues that no other RDBMS customers see. We are creatively and disruptively solving some of the most complex database problems in cloud, related to immense growth, scaling, leveraging the cloud, extremely high performance and high availability requirements. We are looking for a Principal Technical Program Manager, ready to take on challenges at leading programs that drive new architectures, scale, performance, availability and durability for RDS.

Responsibilities of the role include,

  • Collaborate across organizations (Engineering, Product Management, Operations, Finance) and be the linchpin for successful delivery of technologies

  • Create program/project plans, secure commitments, identify risks and mitigations.

  • Report on program and project progress and status consistently and in a transparent way

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics

  • Own all operational metrics and support for the programs

  • Work across multiple resources and orchestrate multiple activities at once to get things done

  • Report on the status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to senior leadership

  • You may be asked to directly lead the design, implementation and delivery of a highly complex cross-functional project in an ambiguous or new technology area.

  • You consistently bring strong, data-driven business and technical judgment to decisions.

  • You have deep knowledge of the core system technologies and/or broad understanding of company systems/technologies (relevant to your program/product domain).

  • You apply this knowledge to invent, evolve, improve, and simplify technologies."

  • Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience

  • 7+ years of technical program management experience

  • Proficient in core project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management

  • Experience leading highly technical programs involving infrastructure, complex systems, distributed systems, or similar engineering or technical product development

  • Experience with cloud technologies.

  • Technical knowledge of databases and respective architectures.

  • Specific examples of using creative solutions to solve problems and accelerate programs

  • Experience analyzing cost/benefit of feature selection

  • Diverse work experience, including experience on innovative programs, and a business curiosity/strategic viewpoint

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Experience communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders across multiple business units

  • Experience in communicating and briefing senior executives

  • Experience with program management methodologies

  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, ambiguous work environment

  • Meets/exceeds Amazon's functional/technical depth and complexity for this role

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related technical field
