A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Principal Systems Engineer will be tasked with complex system design problems that require balancing competing stakeholder needs, keeping abreast of new technologies, and working cross functionally. As a leader in the organization, the Principal Systems Engineer will interface with senior management and senior stakeholders throughout the organization. They will also provide mentorship to ensure that the systems engineering team and system design processes continue to evolve and grow.

  • Assumes responsibility for directing the development, maintenance, and validation support of the system requirements for complex features and next-generation products, in coordination with various stakeholders such as Engineering, Regulatory, IT, Manufacturing, Product Management and Quality Assurance (QA).

  • Participates in system definition tasks such as translating user needs into use-case descriptions, cascading top level requirements to system specifications, defining functional allocations and data flows, designing security measures, and addressing system scalability to meet demand and performance targets.

  • Develops and maintains inter-subsystem interface specifications and contracts. Scope includes but is not limited to functionality, interface behavior, and data privacy and confidentiality measures.

  • Develops and maintains requirements for system performance (e.g., bandwidth, latency), high-availability, fault tolerance and risk mitigation. Develop and maintain requirements for system level monitoring to detect failures as well as predictive trends.

  • Participates as subject matter expert in Risk Management activities related to new products or features.

  • Leads failure analysis activities at the system level, engaging subject matter experts and producing Root Cause Assessment (RCA) reports.

  • Serves as a key member in cross-functional project core teams; leverage expertise across the disciplines to design optimized and realizable solutions.

  • Serves as a technical consulting resource for integration, subsystem, and system V&V activities. Support Integration and End-to-End test protocol development.

  • Considers project-wide and system-wide impacts in decision making.

  • Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Delegates, leads, and mentors other system engineers in the fulfillment of system design activities as described above.

YOU'RE AWESOME AT:

  • Demonstrated expert capability in Systems Engineering practices such as requirements management, design trade-off and cost-benefit analysis, hazards, and risk assessments.

  • Experience working collaboratively under a Quality Management System (QMS), as part of a cross-functional team.

  • A proven ability to work independently and deliver a high-quality work product without close supervision.

  • Ability to assert own ideas and persuade others through effectively consolidating, evaluating, and presenting relevant information.

  • Ability to dive into the details and analyze different cross functional inputs to come up with applicable solutions that balance competing needs.

  • Experience with one or more key systems technology used in Tandem's ecosystem, such as: Cloud architectures, IoT communication protocols, Insulin pumps/CGMs, wireless communication, embedded sensor networks, etc.

  • Ability to mentor and lead small teams composed of more junior personnel.

  • Experience performing cyber security reviews and making security recommendations is desired.

  • Experience in system level failure analysis and root cause investigations is desired.

EXTRA AWESOME:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in System Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Biomedical Engineering is required.

  • Master of Science degree or professional licensing in related field is desired.

  • A minimum of 10 years' experience working as a Systems Engineer or with systems engineering responsibilities in a multidisciplinary project team environment.

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience working in a regulated industry, such as Defense/Aerospace or Medical Devices.

  • Working knowledge of Federal and other medical device regulations such as 21 CFR part 820.30, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601 series, HIPAA and GDPR highly desirable.

  • Experience with Requirements Management Systems highly desirable.

  • Experience with device communication short range protocols (i.e. RF, BLE) desirable.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $160,000 - $200,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate's location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.

Tandem offers health care benefits such as medical, dental, vision, health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts.
