NFI is looking for a Prinicipal Systems Engineer to join the Platform Engineering team. This individual will hold the primary role in the design, architecture, deployment, administration and maintenance of Systems, Servers and related equipment for the NFI Organization. Responsible for day-to-day technical lead support and maintenance of all Data Centers and ensuring operational uptime. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. Work is non-routine and complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Extensive experience required in a medium to large virtualized computing environment. This position reports to the Manager, IT Technology Services.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill an architectural role within the Platform team, leading the design and implementation of approved technologies

  • Provide overall technical leadership to team including execution of integration and test activities, problem resolution and meeting scheduled deliverables

  • Assist in development and implementation of departmental strategies such as standard server builds, virtualization and system consolidation, server lifecycle management, patch management and others as appropriate

  • Analyzes and evaluates current systems and provides guidance on future technical developments

  • 24x7 environment support including patch/upgrade support

  • Proactive in staying abreast of new technologies and tools

  • Identify opportunities for automation of standard activities

  • Take lead in the development and testing of disaster recovery plans

  • Perform ongoing operational activities, problem management, user assistance and training as necessary

  • Provide backup support across other technologies, including UNIX, database, via both formal and on the job training

  • Attend change and release management meetings to ensure communication of approved and planned changes with a view to a strong release to production methodology

  • Support and contribute to open communication flow throughout the organization


  • College Degree
  • BA / BS preferred
  • 7+ years of extensive Systems Engineering in an enterprise environment

  • Proficient in the installation, configuration and monitoring of enterprise systems including backups, account management, performance management, and capacity planning

  • Proficient with VMWare suite of products

  • Experience with Microsoft tools (AD, WSUS, etc)

  • Experience with Windows Server 2008/2012/2016 as well as Windows Group Policies

  • Proficient with Red Hat Linux

  • Builds using Kickstart, Configuration, troubleshooting, Docker Containers, Ansible, NFS, SMB, etc.
  • Enterprise backup expertise in current and emerging Next-Gen technologies (Avamar, Rubrik, Cohesity, etc)

  • Familiarity with Databases (Oracle, SQL Server) and/or Open source technologies

  • Proficient with Remote User access technologies such as Citrix and VMware Horizon.

  • Experience with AIX 5/6 pseries (lpars)

  • General knowledge of IT security/compliance standards (PCI, PII, etc)

  • Excellent analytic, communication, interpersonal skills, and customer relation skills

  • Experience with Google G-Suite Apps

  • Microsoft certification a plus

  • Red Hat certification a plus (RHCSA)

  • Good coaching skills, Excellent people skills

  • Attention to service excellence and detail

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills

  • Develop and maintain technical and team documentation


  • Experience with AWS/Azure based Cloud Architecture and migration experience

  • Solid understanding of cloud based hybrid infrastructur
