Overview

The IT Principal Systems Engineer leads and manages our organization's critical IT infrastructure. This role will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining our complex systems, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and security. The Principal Systems Engineer will also provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the systems engineering team that supports infrastructure, data center and cloud operating technology.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and architecture of enterprise-level systems, ensuring scalability, high availability, and security.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and technical specifications.

  • Manage and oversee the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of Microsoft 365 applications, services, and security solutions.

  • Must have knowledge of cloud and hypervisor platforms components including servers, storage, network devices, and application management.

  • Implement automation solutions to streamline system provisioning and maintenance tasks.

  • Ensure that systems and infrastructure are designed and maintained in compliance with industry security standards and regulations, including SOX.

  • Monitor system performance, analyze bottlenecks, and implement optimizations to ensure optimal system performance.

  • Plan for capacity and scalability to accommodate future growth.

  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

  • Perform regular backups and test recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and availability.

  • Act as the escalation point for complex technical issues, providing expert-level support and resolution.

  • Collaborate with the helpdesk and support teams to address user-reported problems.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior systems engineers.

  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and processes.

  • Create and update system diagrams and technical documentation.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field experience or equivalent industry experience.

  • Proven experience as a senior systems engineer with at least 15 years of experience in IT infrastructure management.

  • In-depth knowledge of server hardware, virtualization technologies, networking, and storage systems.

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft SCCM/Intune for endpoint and mobile device & application management.

  • Experience setup and configuration of Autopilot for end user device provisioning.

  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 E5 security and compliance tools including Defender for Endpoints & Cloud Apps, DLP, Information Protection and eDiscovery.

  • Experience implementing identity and access management solutions using AD & Azure Active Directory (Entra), including conditional access policies and MFA.

  • Experience with Scripting (PowerShell, VB, Pearl, etc.) to manage and automate complex system tasks and automation.

  • Experience with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure) is a plus.

  • Certifications such as MCSE, VMware Certified Professional (VCP), or equivalent are desirable.

  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity best practices and principles.

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong communication and leadership abilities.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience of cloud environments, hardware platforms, enterprise software applications operations, and outsourced systems, including the following: Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, SCCM/Intune, virtualization, server platforms, and SAN technology.

  • Experience with Microsoft Security and Compliance tools deployment including the following: Defender for Cloud Apps, Defender for Endpoint, DLP and Data Classification/Retention.

  • Experience with hosted and managed data center environments and vendor management associated with this technology.

  • Knowledge of most or all of the following: Co-location vendor management, systems monitoring and management, and IT Security practices (IT Systems & Physical security).

  • Demonstrated ability to apply technology solutions to business problems.

  • Exceptional customer service orientation.

  • Must have strong organizational skills and multi-tasking capabilities, excellent written and spoken communication skills.

  • Experience in a multi-divisional and multi-location operations as well as disaster recovery best practices.

  • Travel - no more than 25% travel, although could be higher in the first six months.

Physical Requirements

  • Typical office environment - Hybrid environment (in office and remote).

  • May require some travel (25% or less).
