Aurora hires people who are excited to build the future of transportation. We are looking for machine learning experts to develop and implement the core algorithms for interpreting sensor data that enables intelligent driving decisions. You will be developing and applying learning-based algorithms related to sequential prediction, recursive state estimation, and classification for object detection and tracking.

In this role, you will

  • Collaborate with other members of the Perception autonomy team to improve/ideate and implement perception algorithms that power the Aurora Driver

  • Serve as a technical expert for the team on at least one area related to machine learning, with particular focus on computer vision, recursive state estimation, structured prediction, optimization, and others

  • Research and develop state-of-the art deep learning/machine learning models to improve our perception solutions under challenging and diverse scenarios (e.g., on highways and city streets, long-range and multi-sensor object detection, detection under degraded sensors, etc.).

  • Design, prototype and evaluate machine learning algorithms and DNN architectures for detection of traffic actors, their action recognition, and semantic understanding of various traffic scenes that the Aurora Driver encounters.

  • Integrate, test, and deploy production-ready solutions into the production code that powers the Aurora Driver.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent software engineering skills in Python and/or C++

  • Extensive exp in any deep learning framework, such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow

  • Extensive exp in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or other relevant areas of Artificial Intelligence (e.g., as evidenced by industry experience, publication record)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Relevant industry experience (prior work on self-driving vehicles, autonomy, and/or robotics projects)

  • Contributions to open source project(s)

  • Strong track record in any field related to machine learning, as evidenced by top-tier publications

  • Examples of relevant fields and conferences: computer vision (e.g., CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, IJCV), machine learning (e.g., ICML, NeurIPS, JMLR, PAMI), robotics (e.g., RSS, IJRR), graphics (e.g., SIGGRAPH, TOG)

Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver™-to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.</p><p>As Waymo is becoming a multi-product company, Trucking is our second largest opportunity and will see massive growth in 2022. We believe that commercial trucking, the backbone of our economy, stands to reap untold benefits by deploying autonomous trucks, particularly during long-haul stretches. Roads will be safer. Goods will be cheaper. Truckers will be called upon to use their skills in new ways while the truck itself becomes a trusted navigation partner.</p><p>In this role, you will:</p><ul><li>Investigate and develop computer vision algorithms and ML models for autonomous trucking perception,</li><li>Work on deployment of these models on a fleet of autonomous trucks.</li></ul><p>At a minimum we'd like you to have:</p><ul><li>BS in Computer Science, Machine learning or a related field.</li><li>2+ years of experience with hands-on experience in computer vision, or machine learning projects</li><li>C++ and/or Python programming skills.</li></ul><p>It's preferred if you have:</p><ul><li><p>M.Sc. or Ph.D. in computer vision, machine learning, or a related field.</p></li><li><p>Experience in deep learning for computer vision.</p></li><li><p>Expertise with stereo camera system and sensor fusion</p></li><li><p>Industry research or production experience in robotics.</p></li></ul><p>Note: The following is only applicable for roles hired in the US.
