Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal or Senior Principal Structural Engineer on the Aircraft Dynamics team located in Redondo Beach, CA. As an engineer supporting the Aircraft Dynamics section, the selected candidate will support Northrop's portfolio of existing and emerging aircraft programs.
This position will contribute to a broad range of programs at different stages, performing analysis, ground test, and flight test activities. The selected candidate must be capable of working well independently and with multi-disciplinary program teams. This role within the Flight Sciences department serves many advanced design programs, and therefore the candidate must be well organized and thrive in a fast paced environment supporting multiple efforts concurrently.
This requisition may be filled at either a level 3 or a level 4.
Essential Functions:
Establish aeroelastic design criteria to guide the development of advanced designs
Perform project planning to determine program requirements and develop plans for execution
Generate and validate structural dynamic & aeroelastic FEM models
Execute modal analysis, evaluate modal correlation across FEM and test data sets
Perform aeroelastic analysis including static aeroelastic solutions, flutter, and gust loads
Support validation test activities including: actuator testing, ground vibration, aeroelastic wind tunnel testing, and flutter flight testing
Develop and present materials for internal and external program related briefings
Responsible to build consensus through peer and Subject Matter Experts (SME) review and communicate test and analysis results to internal and external customers

Basic Qualifications:
Principal Structural Engineer: Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience OR Master's degree in a STEM discipline with a minimum of 3 years of experience OR PhD in a STEM discipline with a minimum of 0 years of experience. Senior Principal Engineer: Bachelor's degree in a STEM with 9 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master's degree in STEM with 7 years of related engineering experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 4 years of related engineering experience
Proficiency generating and validating structural dynamic & aeroelastic FEM models, utilizing FEMAP & NASTRAN
Proficiency performing aeroelastic analysis including static aeroelastic solutions, flutter, and gust loads
A current active U.S. Government in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher is required to start, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (PAR/SPA)
Preferred Qualifications:
10+ years of professional experience in the discipline of Aircraft Dynamics or Loads
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering preferred
Experience in Dynamics Analysis Methods and Documentation, as well as the development and manipulation of large Finite Element Models using NASTRAN, FEMAP or other FEM tools.
Experience using industry standard analysis software such as NASTRAN, ZAERO, Matlab, etc.
Knowledge of Mil-stds applicable to aircraft design and certification
Experience with the planning and execution of ground tests required for aircraft certification and validation of structural dynamic models & analyses.
Capable of performing vibroacoustic environment definition and related analyses
Experience supporting sub-system qualification activities
Familiarity with CAD applications (CATIA / NX)
Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office with strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate and present technical material to various stakeholders
Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% time
A current active in-scope U.S. Government DoD Secret clearance with previous Special Program Access (PAR/SPA) is preferred
