The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love

The Translational Medicine department at Genentech provides translational research to inform clinical development in disease areas of Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infectious Diseases (TM-OMNI). Our research encompasses cutting edge support of clinical biomarker discovery and development, development of personalized healthcare strategies, and clinical translational research to study the molecular and cellular pathways driving disease to generate novel target and biomarker approaches.

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Principal or Principal Lab Group Head to join TM-OMNI to drive biomarker and drug development and/or translational research efforts in multiple sclerosis. Our department is responsible for identifying novel approaches to treat MS using clinical translational research; designing, implementing, and interpreting biomarker results; and establishing new ways to speed clinical development in MS through biomarkers. Our group uses relevant human clinical samples and deep molecular and cellular phenotyping approaches to evaluate disease heterogeneity and disease modification by therapeutics to guide assessment of disease pathogenesis and drug discovery and development. Lab Group Heads within the department provide scientific leadership of novel projects to target unmet need in disease, and discover or develop biomarkers to advance clinical trial development.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Working to identify new targets and biomarkers in support of drug development projects in multiple sclerosis.

  • Leading efforts to support clinical trials, lead data generation and analyses within internal studies, and/or lead external academic collaborations relating to understanding disease pathogenesis in multiple sclerosis. Success in these responsibilities requires a thorough understanding of disease and drug target biology, creativity and attention to detail, and experience in integrating biomarkers into clinical trials and/or with target identification or validation.

  • Familiar with molecular/immunological techniques and analytic methods including immunoassay, qPCR, complex in vitro modeling systems, functional genomics, genomic sequencing, scRNA-seq, TCR-seq, CITE-seq or spatial transcriptomics and/or computational methods/analytics (knowledge of R or -Python)

  • Working in close partnership across various functions including Research, Bioanalytical Assay Department, Diagnostics, Clinical, Biostatistics, Computational Science, Regulatory and with external partners.

  • Providing effective communication with presentations at cross-functional teams, internal review committees, and external conferences, and will also involve writing biomarker sections of clinical protocols, reports, regulatory filings and scientific publications.

Who You Are:

  • Candidates must have a PhD or MD in Neuroscience and/or Immunology, or a related field (Principal Scientist with at least 3 years'/Senior Principal Scientist with 5 years of post-doctoral or fellowship experience in basic or translational research either in an academic and/or industry setting).

  • Candidate demonstrating a high level of independence and be able to develop hypotheses, direct lab scientists, and develop computational strategies to support analysis and interpretation.

  • Strong writing and communication skills are required, as evidenced by publications, meeting abstracts and/or drug development reports.

  • Individual who would be passionate about using their understanding of disease biology to make impactful contributions to clinical drug development.(willingness to collaborate across time zones including our Swiss site is a must).

  • Prior experience in multiple sclerosis, including clinical trials, and a demonstrated ability to function as part of a cross-functional team such as research or clinical trial project teams (preferred).
