The Senior Principal Research Statistician in Statistical Innovation is responsible for providing scientific, statistical and strategic leadership to influence key stakeholders and proposing, evaluating, developing and deploying advanced and novel statistical/analytical methodology and associated tools in Clinical Development to ensure statistical and operational excellence. This individual contributor proactively drives Development forward by designing innovative clinical trials and monitoring and introducing innovative statistical concepts and tools to enable continuous improvement of the products and projects. In this highly empowered and collaborative role, the Senior Principal Research Statistician partners with statistical, clinical, and regulatory experts to broadly impact the portfolio by creating new ways to advance medicines to patients.


  • Leads the evaluation, introduction, development and education of novel statistical approaches

  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to propose innovative design and analyses options and to evaluate benefit and risks to help team and management to make a more informed decision

  • Provides consultation and guidance on advanced statistical methods (e.g. Adaptive designs, Bayesian methods, multiplicity, subgroup identification/data mining, predictive modeling etc.).

  • Applies imagination. Creates, invents, and implements new or better approaches, alternatives, and breakthrough ideas that are valued by customers within the function. Develops and advances existing and breakthrough technology.

  • Advances statistics expertise within function. Demonstrates modeling and simulation capabilities with appropriate level of engagement on activities in support of drug development scenario planning and program optimization.

  • Shows proficiency in development, implementation, and rollout of statistical tools and techniques (e.g. using R, R-shiny, Python, Julia, etc.) to operationalize key innovative methodologies making diverse approaches available to study teams.

  • Maintains external reputation as discipline expert. Influences industry with presentations, serving on panel discussions at industry meetings, attending industry meetings, or authoring articles for peer-reviewed publications.

Level will be based on education and years of experience

Qualifications- Principal:

  • PhD in statistics or related field with 6-8+ years of related work experience. MS in statistics or related field with 10-12+ years of related work experience. Preferred: Ph.D

  • Advanced knowledge of statistical modeling and methodology and good understanding of drug development process

  • Demonstrated experience in advanced statistical methods with strong scientific computing & simulation skills.

  • Experience in Bayesian and novel adaptive designs is preferred

  • Proven ability to provide statistical consultation with minimal supervision to advise discipline experts and leaders within and across function.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills

  • Passionate about statistical innovation and always think out of the box and is never satisfied with status quo

Preferred (Senior Principal):

  • PhD in statistics or related field with 8+ years of related work experience. MS in statistics or related field with 12+ years of related work experience. Preferred: Ph.D

VIEW JOBS 2/15/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-05-15T00:00 The Genomic Research Center (GRC) at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated computational biologist / bioinformatics scientist to play an integral role in a multi-disciplinary team passionate about developing new therapies for the treatment of cancer. AbbVie GRC spans multiple locations and therapeutic areas, is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, pharmacogenomics and multiple population cohorts and works across all R&D within Abbvie. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing world class genetics and genomics research, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials. We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist / Principal Research Scientist based in North Chicago, IL to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to contribute to discovery and clinical development of AbbVie oncology programs. In addition, you will contribute to presentation and publication of translational findings in peer reviewed journals, new drug applications and regulatory filings. Key Responsibilities * Interrogate large scale pre-clinical and clinical -omics data sets such as NGS, microarray, proteomics, single cell sequencing, etc., and clinical information to generate and test biomarker hypotheses, and apply the biomarker strategy through clinical trial studies. * Analyze multi-omics data from pre-clinical models and clinical samples to support novel target identification, prioritization and validation for the treatment of cancer. * Collaborate with a diverse set of scientists from molecular biology, cancer biology, biochemistry, biostatistics and clinical backgrounds, as well as colleagues in development, regulatory, epidemiology, etc. to generate impactful analyses to support existing and identify new therapeutic opportunities. * Build and maintain world-class bioinformatics capability (genomic and lab technologies, genomic databases, analytics methodology, software and pipelines) to support oncology projects including early target discovery, biomarker identification and validation, and clinical trial applications. Position will be hired based on level of experience. * Bachelors, Maseters or PhD. in computational biology, bioinformatics, or statistical genetics with typically 12-14+ (BS), 10-12+ (MS) or 4-6+ (PhD) years of experience and demonstrated skills/accomplishments in an oncology setting * Expertise in computational biology/bioinformatics, genetic and genomic analyses, data and literature mining, disease and biological pathway and gene network/ systems biology analysis. * Good grasp of drug development, biochemistry, molecular biology, cancer biology and related subjects. * Experience with target discovery and biomarker strategies for drug development in areas including apoptosis, epigenetics, small molecule, antibody or antibody-drug conjugate, and immuno-oncology is highly valued. * Strong programming and data analytical skills, expertise in various bioinformatics software, databases, and programing language and packages. Experience of working with cloud based high-performance computation environment, machine learning and AI application in biotech field is highly valued. * Teamwork, strong presentation and communication skills with people from different academic backgrounds and job responsibilities.
