A Principal Engineer is part of a key team of Nordstrom IT professionals. This is a strategic position within the Engineering discipline, influencing the direction and technology decisions for discipline/practice. As a key contributor to the development of new principles and concepts, this expert applies advanced theories and principles to create precedent-setting innovations and solutions for complex or risky business situations.


  • Applies advanced concepts, theories, and principles to create multi-disciplinary innovations and solutions for the most complex or risky business situations

  • Contributes to development of new principles and concepts

  • Collaborates with and influences team, partners, and the organization, and is responsible for solutions across multiple teams/organizations

  • Drives accountability across multiple organizations and influences decisions that impact critical long term IT strategy for organizational success

  • Tests all scenarios across multiple organizations; performs quality reviews and ensures appropriate quality processes and solution meet internal/external customer requirements

  • Provides thought leadership across multiple organizations to ensure that systems and services are designed, and operating to achieve optimal levels of performance, reliability, and sustainability

  • Demonstrates ability to coach team members around best practices for delivering highly performant and scalable solutions

  • Drives security coding practices and security system fundamentals across multiple organizations

  • Understands security protocols and interprets security and compliance requirements

  • Develops and maintains high quality instrumentation across multiple organizations

  • Demonstrates ability to identify important areas to instrument across multiple organizations

  • Identifies & interprets KPIs for continuous improvement across multiple organizations

  • Supports Engineering best practices across multiple organizations. Examples:
    o Mentors Engineers throughout organization on appropriate data structures to implement solutions
    o Applies algorithm and data structure knowledge as well as knowledge of underlying platforms/frameworks to diagnose and optimize the most difficult performance issues
    o Ensures data modeling is clean and performant across organization, including choices of normalized vs. denormalized data
    o Mentors Engineers throughout organization on SOLID principles and use of relevant design patterns
    o Applies detailed knowledge of Internet protocols when designing and reviewing APIs or diagnosing issues
    o Applies detailed knowledge of network protocols and operating system specifics when diagnosing issues or configuring infrastructure
    o Promotes Engineering best practices across organization and is viewed as an authority on industry trends in technologies and Engineering practices

This position may be required to perform other related duties as assigned

  • BS or MS in CS, Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 10 years of professional experience in and across discipline
