Our Chemical Process Development group is a team of organic chemists, analytical chemists, and chemical engineers working together to design novel syntheses from raw materials to supply new medicines to patients. Our scientists focus on developing safe, economical, sustainable, and robust processes to support clinical trials and the launch of new medicines across various drug modalities including small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and antibody drug conjugates. The work is driven by innovative science, data-driven decision-making, and collaborative teamwork. The scientific knowledge package from the manufacturing process, design parameters, and control strategies enables regulatory filings to bring these novel medicines to patients worldwide.

In the role as a Principal/Senior Principal Scientist within the Separation and Enabling Technologies Group, the ideal candidate will:

  • Provide separation science research and support for the Process Chemistry and Development (CPD) department at BMS in New Jersey, primarily in Summit (SMW) but also in New Brunswick (NBR) based on project needs.

  • Interact closely with a team of scientists and engineers, including external service providers, to deliver both GMP and non-GMP separations solutions

  • Develop chromatography methods for chiral and achiral separation at both analytical and preparative scale.

  • Use both preparative liquid chromatography (HPLC) and preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) to achieve achiral and chiral separations at milligram to gram to kilogram scales

  • Develop and execute purification processes for payload-linker molecules to support ADC/IMC process development and produce pre-clinical supplies

  • Work with other Separations team members to ensure that the equipment infrastructure is fully operational, and to troubleshoot problems as they arise.

  • Influence the strategic plan for separation science in CPD, and to identify and complete continuous improvement projects that may include chromatography method development, infrastructure improvements, IT and process improvements, quality improvements, etc.

  • Apply scientific and/or technical skills and functional knowledge and experience to conduct research in Separations

  • Work collaboratively within the Separations and Enabling Technologies team, as well as with Project Teams, and Structure Elucidation Scientists (ISE), CPD-Analytical, solid-state groups, and with the Discovery Separations team

  • Document purification methods and analytical results in standardized reports to be delivered to project teams as well as to external collaborators and internal or external manufacturing teams

  • Contribute to initiatives related to continuous improvement or development of new approaches/Technologies

  • Participate in discussions and makes presentations in multidisciplinary meetings, logically presenting information to convey clear, key messages to advance projects in our pipeline

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 - 12 years of academic/industry experience or Master's Degree and 6-9 years of academic/industry experience or Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences and 4-6 years of academic/industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analysis and preparative purification of small molecules by HPLC and SFC

  • Demonstrated proficiency in chiral separation by supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and HPLC

  • Familiarity with containment principles and personal-protection practices associated with potent compounds

  • Experience in a high throughput environment managing samples and associated data

  • Experience in UV, MS and CD spectroscopy

  • Familiarity with Ion Exchange Chromatography

  • Familiarity with Affinity chromatography, lyophilization, and size exclusion chromatography

  • Experience operating in a GMP environment

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including troubleshooting processes, instruments, and data management issues

  • Proficiency in scientific/technical writing including report summaries

  • Experience using Berger, Shimadzu, Waters, and Sepiatec equipment is a plus, expectation is a familiarity with these systems

  • Familiarity with AKTA purification systems, and TFF and other membrane technologies

  • Familiarity with Process Analytical Technologies is a plus

  • Experience with MassLynx, Chromescope, ProNTo, Empower, LabSolutions, ChemStation is a plus

  • Mastery of ChemDraw, MS Office, and ELN is required
