Our Nestle R&D facility is charged with driving innovation and global mastership in the baby food category to meet the unique nutritional and developmental needs of infants and toddlers.

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Scientist, Thermal Processing at our Fremont, Michigan location.

Main Purpose of Job:

Focus will be on ensuring the safety and quality of shelf-stable infant/toddler foods produced via aseptic, retort, and hot-fill methods as the Thermal Processing Authority (TPA) for Nestle NDC Fremont and through thermal process support for NPTC Nutrition.

Key Outputs:

NDC Fremont project support

  • Establish aseptic, retort and hot-fill thermal processes in support of NDC Fremont led Innovation and Renovation projects

  • Design and conduct process establishment studies for new technologies

  • Coordinate heat penetrations, temperature distributions, microbiological challenge studies and thermal process control validations as required

  • Collaborate with Quality and Food Safety to determine critical and operational thermal process control requirements

  • Conduct deviation analyses and recommend product dispositions as needed

  • Provide technical assistance to enhance technical competency, optimize thermal processes, and resolve issues

NDC Fremont Thermal Processing Authority (TPA)

  • Responsible for thermal process filings according to LACF requirements for the NDC Pilot Plant including maintenance of all documentation and records.

  • Coordinate purchase and maintenance of equipment, instruments and software needed to collect and analyze thermal process data, and to calculate or model thermal processes

  • Evaluate thermal process deviations to determine product disposition

  • Perform periodic assessments or internal audits to ensure robustness of the work processes/systems and drive continuous improvement

NPTC Nutrition Thermal Process Expert

  • Support new equipment validations, including microbiological challenge studies and thermal process control validations, as required

  • Provide support to resolve operational issues within Nutrition

  • Develop and deliver thermal processing standards

  • Proactively share Nestl and industry best practices with Nutrition business

Demonstrated competence in fundamentals of project management and team leadership

POSITION SUMMARY: Will be required to perform all job requirements and meet all qualifications as determined by management for HVAC Mechanic. Must be an HVAC Journeyman card holder. Perform duties under the general direction of the Utilities Manager, but works independently to perform start/stop operations and logging, installation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and/or design modification of HVAC, Process Cooling and Ammonia equipment. This will include basic shop safety, plumbing, hydraulic/pneumatic, electrical, and millwright work for the Fremont Plant. This position will participate in optimizing system designs, maintenance and operations processes; focusing on satisfying all safety concerns; and participating in short and long range planning for HVAC, Process Cooling and Ammonia systems. Position makes decisions based upon sound maintenance practices and business needs assessment. In addition, support of the NCE / TPM culture through active participation in processes to effect improvements in the areas of People, Quality, Service, Cost, and New Products & Processes are required. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Must be E.P.A. certified to reclaim and recycle refrigerant. * Must have a RETA CIRO License. * Will test and maintain cooling tower water chemistry. * Respirator trained. * Emergency Response to Technician level. * Performs system start-ups and operational checkouts on equipment including operational & performance qualifications and normal startups after PME's. * Restore equipment to operational status after power outages. * Defines routine maintenance inspections and planned overhauls for equipment based on frequencies or run hours to attain world class performance. * Performs preventive, predictive and pre-emptive maintenance and routine inspections. * Provides operational support assistance to engineers and operations. * Specifies, organizes and maintains adequate spare parts to support the asset base. * Participate in the development of project scopes, design of systems, and functional specifications. * Utilizes technical materials such as equipment manuals, MSDS, safety materials, system and equipment drawings, Process and Instrument Diagrams (PID's), schematics, and blue prints to troubleshoot and maintain systems. * Maintains plant documentation in accordance with management of change procedures and SAP AMM documentation. Performs additional duties as assigned by Management All employees will support and participate in Nestlé Continuous Excellence (NCE) and Total Performance Management (TPM) as a part of their job responsibility within their Business Unit or as assigned within the factory. Employee shall follow Fremont Factory safety & environmental objectives & targets, follow the plant safety rules, report unsafe conditions immediately, report incidents immediately or by the end of the shift, maintain compliance with regulations, and refer to the Safety & Environmental Management System(s) on all related procedures and programs. REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL: * Job requires heavy computer or other technical knowledge to be successful. Performs transactions and/or records information in a computer. High School Diploma or GED required as well as other training. HVAC Journeyman card holder preferred or have an equivalent of education and work experience. * Job requires climbing stairs, ladders, changing filters on the roof and occasionally lifting > 35 lbs. EXPERIENCE: * Previous experience in a food manufacturing or manufacturing setting preferred. * SAP or equivalent CMMS system experience preferred.
