We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Scientist, Platform Development within our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics business located at San Diego, CA. In this role, you will provide technical expertise to the design and development of point-of-care, rapid in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) for Infectious Disease.

The position of Principal Scientist, Platform Development provides technical expertise to a R&D team developing a novel platform for point-of-care testing. Based on the product requirements, this scientist will identify appropriate chemistries/technologies to solve key challenges associated with the product (e.g. reagent deposition/drying, sample preparation). They will be responsible for researching and testing these solutions and working with the larger team to integrate these technologies into the overall system. As the program progresses, the individual will contribute to the medical device development process, including developing specifications, testing/verification, and risk management. Collaboration with the broader Infectious Disease Developed Markets Business (Marketing, Operations, Clinical, Quality, Regulatory) is essential to delivering new product designs from concept to launch.
Tasks and responsibilities:
Research and develop technologies that enable high performance, widely accessible, point-of-care IVD systems.
Collect data to prove the feasibility of technologies or formulations
Work with the larger team to evaluate and integrate technologies into a platform that meets product requirements.
Identify external partners that can provide expertise that we lack or have proprietary technologies that we need.
Interface with a cross-functional project team to manage risks and ensure the product meets quality standards.
Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development and assist in transfer to manufacturing.
Coordinate activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines.
Identify and communicate with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
Perform other duties & projects as assigned.
PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or similar field
8 years of experience in product development roles integrating biochemistry and engineering
Development of systems incorporating cell/viral lysis, filters, lyophilization, magnetic beads, or similar components
Demonstrated ability to drive complex projects with minimal supervision
Experience in medical device development and design controls
Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Organized and detail oriented
Ability to work in a team environment
