The Immunology & Respiratory Diseases department is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial scientist at the Principal level to join our Ridgefield, CT Research team. The successful candidate will provide scientific and managerial leadership of a research group (both bench and PhD level scientists) whose mission is to identify novel candidate biomarkers for discovery-stage (lead optimization) projects, to support planning for Proof of Clinical Principle (PoCP) for novel inflammatory and fibrotic mechanisms for the treatment of intestinal, lung and skin diseases. This role will involve developing and maintaining state-of-the-art technological capabilities, planning and conducting laboratory experiments and interpreting data. This individual will closely collaborate with the Translational Medicine Clinical Pharmacology group to set and implement biomarker strategies. Expertise in immunology and assay development, and experience with diseases driven by inflammatory and fibrotic processes is preferred. This individual may serve as a Research Project Leader for Discovery and Development programs. Responsibilities include talent development and mentoring staff members.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Evaluate molecular & protein candidate biomarkers in human disease matrices relevant to gut, lung and skin diseases, using relevant, cutting-edge technology platforms in a non-GLP environment, to support early clinical development planning to establish Proof of Pharmacologic Principle (PoPP) & Proof of Clinical Principle (PoCP)
Leverage understanding of target specific biology to define correlations between compound exposure (systemic and tissue specific), direct & indirect target occupancy, pathway suppression and proximal and distal measures of target function modulation simultaneously across multiple systemic and tissue matrices.
Develop and utilize a toolbox of technologies towards this end including, but not limited to, generic & custom protein multiplex analysis platforms, proteomic & phospho-proteomic based platforms, analytical & preparative flow cytometry and CY-TOF.
Interface with TA stakeholders in Disease Positioning, In Vivo Pharmacology, Translational Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and Exploratory Innovation/Drug Concept Discovery to assess the translatability of these biomarkers, to inform on target engagement and pharmacodynamic readouts for early clinical trials, and to create hypotheses for patient selection for clinical development. Clearly communicate status of projects, data, strategies and future directions to higher levels of managment and external stakeholders.
Manage & prioritize multiple projects within the lab. Plan and conduct laboratory experiments and evaluate and interpret data.
Establish and maintain a strong external collaboration and CRO network to advance innovation goals.
Serve as the Research Project Leader / Team Leader on Discovery and Development programs.
Effectively manage and develop scientific staff
Maintain complete and accurate Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs).Independently designs and performs scientific experiments with a predefined goal including developing new methodologies, protocols and or test procedures that contribute to core group/research goals and reflect expert knowledge; Direct and oversee experimental design and results of technicians and junior level scientists
Prepares clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations. Independently communicate results in the form of reports and/ or presentations; Deliver updates to senior level management in context of overall project goals
Demonstrates an expertise in a specific project-relevant area OR technology; Provide guidance and expertise to advance specific projects OR evaluate and propose new technologies and concepts in support of multiple projects
Develops broad knowledge in field of expertise, including the ability to interpret current literature relevant to R&D projects, and visibility outside of functional area
Assumes responsibility for direct reports as needed including recruiting, managing, mentoring and developing scientific staff
Complies with all applicable regulations; Ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies
Contributes to departmental administration; Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel
Ph.D, M.D. or equivalent degree in immunology, biology or a related discipline with >2 years of postdoctoral experience and 5 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry. A proven record and demonstrated experience / knowledge in the development of multi-color/ multi-parametric flow cytometry based approaches and / or multiplex protein detection platforms to address biological and disease associated questions.
Experience in the development of target engagement / pharmacodynamic biomarker assays is highly desired.
Experience with diseases driven by inflammatory and fibrotic processes preferably in the intestine, lung or skin
Experience in managing a laboratory tasked with the identification and implementation of novel pharmacodynamics and disease associated biomarkers.
Strong publication record and evidence of presenting data at national or international conferences
Excellent agility to lead and manage multiples tasks
Previous experience of leading a drug discovery project. Experience in processes associated with early stages of clinical development
Strong written and oral communications skills and ability to prepare and present data to project teams and higher levels of research management as required
Experience in working in a matrix environment and supporting multiple projects at same time
Ability to provide training and guidance to laboratory personnel
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
Must be 18 years of age or older
