The Discovery Biotherapeutics team at BMS seeks to understand the structure and function of complex molecules such as bispecific antibodies, antibody drug conjugates and endogenous proteins in order to optimize their utility as therapeutic agents. We collaborate with biology and translational scientists imbedded in the Thematic Research Centers in order to prosecute Targets and Biological pathways with disease modifying potential. By using a blend of internal and external technologies and capabilities, we work to discover and deliver first-in-class as well as best-in-class molecules that warrant clinical evaluation for patient benefit.

As part of the Discovery Biotherapeutics efforts at BMS, the Functional Assays team plays a key role in discovering and characterizing a first- and best- in-class Biotherapeutics pipeline. The Principal Scientist position is located in San Diego (CA), working with a cross-functional and matrixed teams across two other BMS sites located in Cambridge (MA) and the San Francisco Bay Area (CA). The successful candidate is expected to provide scientific and technical leadership from primary binder screen workflow design and execution to functional characterization of a wide range of biotherapeutic drug candidates, including antibody drug conjugates, bispecific and multi-specific antibodies, and other biomolecule formats to progress BMS's robust pipeline.

Expertise in antibody and protein structure-function screening is highly desired. A track record in automation or high-throughput screening assay development, antibody function, immunological and effector activity screening will be highly valued. A track record of demonstrating creativity, taking initiative and ability in influencing at all levels is desired.

The candidate should be able to thrive in a highly dynamic, supportive, yet independently thinking culture. Also, expectations of being pragmatic, comfortable with complex science and procedures, as well as practical and operationally experienced.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate must be capable of working and operating in a laboratory environment for most of their work schedule.

  • Manage multiple antibody/binder discovery processes - develop fit-for-purpose primary screening assay and provide characterization support for lead molecules.

  • Position high-throughput, semi-automated or automated systems to enable rapid cellular functional screening of complex antibody candidates.

  • Enable and maintain our biologics drug discovery operations: represent departmental function on project teams. Identify and manage research collaborations/CROs, collaborate with other stakeholders across Discovery Biotherapeutics sites.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree with 8+ years of academic or industry experience

Or

Master's Degree with 6+ years of academic or industry experience

Or

PhD with 4+ years of academic or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with 4+ years of industry experience

  • Significant experience in assay validation, antibody primary screening, and downstream MOA profiling

  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in various techniques for protein and antibody characterization, including BLI or SPR, flow cytometry, and high content imaging

  • Data processing experience with workflows using Genedata or other equivalent data management system

  • Hands-on experience working with neurodegenerative, immunosciences, or oncology biologics

For California Sites - The starting compensation for this job is a range from $121,000 - $167,200, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
