The Position

At Genentech Research and Early Development, we aim to leverage deep understanding of tissue biology and pathophysiology as well as outstanding technical expertise to develop innovative therapies for the most intractable diseases.

We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated and creative Principal Scientist to join the Department of Regenerative Medicine to pursue target discovery, drug development, and translational research efforts focused on retinal biology and age-related macular degeneration. The successful candidate will head a research group with the mission to identify novel approaches to treat AMD. This will be achieved through novel target discovery approaches in collaboration with colleagues in Human Genetics, Functional Genomics and Biomarker Discovery. Principal Scientists within the department are expected to develop an independent but highly collaborative research program, and to provide scientific leadership to initiate and advance new projects targeting unmet medical needs.

The Opportunity:

You will be:

  • Working to identify new targets for drug development in AMD.

  • Leading efforts relating to understanding disease pathogenesis in AMD. Success in these responsibilities requires a thorough understanding of disease and drug target biology, creativity and attention to detail.

  • Will have expertise in molecular and cellular biology using in vitro and/or in vivo model systems, and possess a deep mechanistic understanding of the cellular pathways that contribute to disease

  • Providing effective communication with presentations at cross-functional teams, internal review committees, and external conferences.

  • Work in close collaboration with other research labs in the Departments of Regenerative Medicine and Immunology Discovery, as well as investigators in areas such as human genetics, genomics, imaging, and small molecule and large molecule drug discovery.

Who You Are:

  • You must have a PhD in Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, and/or Immunology, or a related field (with at least 3 years of post-doctoral or fellowship experience in basic or translational research either in an academic and/or industry setting).

  • You have a sustained and significant publication record in top tier journals in the relevant field.

  • You have a genuine interest in translating basic research insights into impactful therapeutics.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $143,100 - 265,700. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
