Principal Planner

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs difficult professional and managerial work directing the activities of the Long Range Planning Division. Oversees long-range planning projects, serves as a technical advisor on planning and zoning issues to the County Administrator, Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and other County agencies as requested. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Planning. Does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Coordinates the activities and staff assigned to the Long Range Planning Division.

• Supervises the Long Range Planning Division within the Department.

• Prepares work programs, assigns schedules, reviews completed work, and supervises the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports.

• Directs the preparation of highly detailed studies and comprehensive plans.

• Provides technical advice to the Planning Commission, Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator.

• Appears before the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, other County departments, public agencies, civic organizations and media groups to present, discuss, or interpret specific planning programs, policies and ordinances.

• Researches, documents and develops alternative policies on matters pertaining to County Planning.

• Prepares codes, reports and ordinances for consideration by the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors.

• Keeps abreast of legislation dealing with planning, zoning and community development issues.

• Coordinates research and prepares grant applications for state and federal funds.

• Assists with Economic Development efforts in the County.

• Evaluates performance of staff on an annual basis.

• Represents Roanoke County on regional boards and commissions, as appropriate.
