Salary: Annual salary range: $81,511.95 - $98,841.55, commensurate with education and years of experience.

Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for administering the academic and training programs for a regional group of state schools or institutions; providing supervision to the teaching staff; evaluating curriculum and classroom work, conducting staff meetings and supervising a variety of administrative functions.

Typical Functions

  • Prepares and revises classroom schedules for teachers and students; makes teacher assignments; supervises classroom work and students to promote maximum achievement by each student; may teach classroom subjects.

  • Provides leadership to teaching staff in the planning, scheduling and development of school programs; leads staff meetings; visits classes to observe; evaluates performance of teachers; confers with teachers and suggests measures for improving instructional methods; advises teachers of special methods to use in special or problem cases.

  • Maintains records of student progress and achievement; develops and implements procedures for reporting progress made by each student.

  • Confers with and advises the appropriate administrator concerning the daily school routine, administrative problems and curriculum; participates in administrative staff meetings.

  • Plans, organizes and administers the institution's academic programs in accordance with state statutes, Department of Education accreditation regulations and departmental operations and field memorandums.

  • Cooperates with the School Superintendent in the development of system wide staff development programs in accordance with the state statutes, Department of Education regulations, departmental policy and American Correctional Association (ACA) standards; assures that each member of the professional staff meets minimum staff development requirements for continued professional certification on an individual basis and for continued accreditation of the educational system as a whole.

  • Assists in the preparation of annual grant requests, program evaluation reports, needs assessment reports and fiscal reports, all as required by the State Department of Education and Federal regulatory agencies with regard to various compensatory education programs.

  • Assists in the planning of curriculum offerings and the preparation of the annual application for accreditation by the State Board of Education; supervises program operations to assure compliance with all accreditation standards on an ongoing basis and cooperates with State Department of Education field accreditation officers during the actual on-site audit of school operations.

  • Participates in the preparation of Chapter I grant applications; supervises the routine operations of the Chapter I program and assists in the preparation of annual reports to the State Department of Education Compensatory Education Division and appropriate Federal regulatory authorities. Cooperates with appropriate authorities in annual on-site audits and inspections.

  • Cooperates with the Oklahoma Department of Libraries to plan in-service training for the professional library staff and to prepare Library Services Construction Act (LSCA) grant applications. Provides documentation of local funds expended for library improvement and approves all purchases from LSCA funds at the local level.

  • Maintains all permanent records of the accredited high school including student transcripts, graduation records, attendance registers, accreditation files, ACA files and other related educational records in a manner consistent with Department of Education regulations.

  • Works in cooperation with the State Department of Vocational-Technical education to maintain staff certification and curriculum acceptability in high school vo-tech programs.

The School Principal job family consists of only one level and incumbents are responsible for performing all functions related to the position.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master's degree in education, special education, educational administration or psychology, a current Provisional or Standard Oklahoma Administrator Certificate, a Standard Oklahoma Teaching Certificate and three years of experience in classroom teaching or educational administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting a doctorate in one of the above areas for one year of the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of current school administration principles and practices; of modern teaching methods; of the psychology of exceptional behavior; of methods of testing; of learning disabilities; and of state educational program standards. Ability is required to plan a school curriculum; to evaluate instructional procedures; to conduct teachers' meetings; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and to carry out other routine school operations.

Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee.

Essential Functions: Position is a high school principal, grades 9-12. Supervises classroom teachers and students in their studies to assure maximum achievement by each student. Provides leadership to the teaching staff in teachers meetings and in the planning, scheduling, and development of the school program; participates in staff meetings and coordinates the planning and functioning of all school related or professional committee activities. Visits classrooms to observe; evaluates performance of teachers; confers with teachers and suggest measures for improving instructional methods; advises teachers of special methods to use in special or problem cases. Maintains records of the student progress and achievement; develops and implements procedures for reporting to parents the progress made by each student. Provides general administrative supervision of units related to residential life such as dormitories, recreation, transportation, and health services; assures that policy decisions and directives are implemented. Assist in providing general direction for professional personnel concerned with the conduct of the academic, and recreational programs; advise other specialists and consultants directly concerned with the development of the student. Confers with and advises the Superintendent concerning the daily school routine, administrative problems, and curriculum; participates in and conducts staff meetings. Performs related work as required and assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: Administrative experience.
