Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer in the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Office of CO+I, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing new products and solutions that improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of Microsoft's data centers. You will work with a cross-functional team of engineers, researchers, and business partners to identify customer needs, generate innovative ideas, and deliver high-quality solutions. You will also collaborate with external vendors and suppliers to ensure alignment with Microsoft's standards and specifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • 9+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years experience with mission critical mechanical systems
  • 3+ years experience with designing systems and/or developing products for industrial or mission critical environments.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience with cross-disciplined systems design (electrical, IT/Telecom, supervisory control and data acquisition).

  • Data center thermal systems design, analysis, and optimization of cooling systems for data center environments, hydronics, cooling distribution, and heat exchangers.

  • Data Center and data center product structural analysis.

Mechanical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
