DRS NIS Mechanical engineering design candidate would become a key member of an integrated product team tasked to develop infrared sensors and related military products. The duties would primarily be associated with the mechanical design and packaging of cryogenically cooled infrared sensors. As part of DRS' multidiscipline team, the successful candidate would be involved in mechanical concept to detailed design, as well as supporting the integration and testing of products.
The qualified ME candidate will be a motivated self-starter who can work with other engineers to resolve technical problems, establish approaches for solutions, and complete mechanical scope of work. In this position, the candidate will develop technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle including proposal, design, manufacture, integration and test of various types of sensor assemblies with considerations in thermal and structural performance in vacuum and cryogenic environments. Familiarity with CREO/Pro Engineer, FEA modeling, and a good knowledge of drawing standards is strongly recommended. The candidate will work under general direction or supervision while following established procedures and guidelines.
Basic Qualifications and Required Skills
BSME with 8+ years experience in mechanical design
Proficiency using Pro/E or equivalent 3D CAD tool
Experience in FEA thermal and/or structural modeling
Understanding of manufacturing methods and processes, factory standards, fabrication processes, and assembly documentation.
Excellent grasp of priciples of machine element design and heat transfer
Ability to read detailed engineering drawings, specifications and an understanding of Geometric, Dimensional & Tolerance per ASME Y14.5
Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Communicate well, both in verbal presentations and written documentation.
Design of experiments and practical problem solving
Experience designing to requirements of MIL-STD-810
Ability to work in a team environment
Must be a motivated, self-starter
MSME or related engineering program with a strong background in the thermosciences area and/or or vibrations
Proficiency in CREO3 or higher
Structural, dynamic and thermal FEA using ANSYS
Experienced in design of products for cryogenic environments
Direct experience in developing detailed mechanical designs and documentation packages for infrared mechanical systems
Experience in high vacuum technology
Experience in hermetic sealing technology and assembly methods
2+ years experience in defense electronics
Failure analysis and analytical skills
Electronics MEMS or microelectronics packaging experience
Knowledgeable in quality management systems such as ISO 9001, AS9100
Duties and Responsibilities
Detailed product design and modeling, material selection, structural and thermal analyses
Hands-on involvement with manufacturing and build of designs
Creating and developing mechanical detail and assembly drawings
Support internal and external customer level design reviews
Design, develop, and implement technical solutions to complex problems
Define and conduct design verification testing to support risk mitigation of new designs
Transitioning current and future development designs into production
Creation of engineering drawings and engineering documentation
Coordination with subcontractors and suppliers
Other duties as assigned
Flexibility in schedule to work OT.
