POSITION DESCRIPTION: Carroll College invites applications for the position of Principal Faculty

  • Director of Clinical Education (DCE) of the developing Physician Assistant Program. The DCE is a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment in the Physician Assistant Studies program with a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. Faculty are strongly encouraged to maintain a part-time clinical practice. The DCE will report directly to the Physician Assistant Program Director.

Under the supervision of the Program Director and in collaboration with other members of the program faculty and staff, the DCE will provide oversight and direction in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the PA program's clinical education curriculum that emphasizes achievement of program learning outcomes and competencies in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards. The DCE will develop and implement effective processes for the recruitment and retention of high-quality clinical rotation sites and the placement of student learners at these sites. The DCE will oversee the curricular aspects of the clinical phase of the program, including but not limited to development of course syllabi, learning outcomes, and assessments. In addition to the primary duties in the clinical phase of the program, the DCE will have some teaching responsibilities in the pre-clinical phase and participate in program and college administrative duties. This position requires excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and support, have excellent critical thinking, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

The ideal candidate will be able to start on or around June 1, 2024. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis and pass a criminal background check.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Master's degree (or higher) from an accredited Physician Assistant/Associate program is required at the time of student matriculation. Applicants currently working towards a Master's or Doctoral degree will be considered.

  • Currently licensed physician assistant in good standing in the state of Montana or eligible to obtain licensure in Montana within 12 months of appointment.

  • Current certification by NCCPA.

  • Ability to travel within the state and region to conduct on-site clinical site assessments.

  • A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience as a physician assistant.

  • Ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to work in a team-based model of educational excellence.

  • Proficiency in basic computer technology and ability to learn new course learning management system(s), learning platforms and educational technologies.

Preferred:

  • Prior faculty experience at an accredited physician assistant program.

  • Prior experience teaching or precepting physician assistant and/or medical students.

  • Previous administrative experience.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Teaching:

  • Teaching is expected across the curriculum and assigned according to expertise, interest, and/or need.

  • Act as course director, coordinating, teaching, and evaluating effectiveness of assigned courses in the clinical curriculum, ensuring course learning outcomes, lecture objectives, and methods of student assessment are being met.

  • Participate in student advising and coaching.

  • Assist with student remediation and enrichment activities when appropriate.

Administrative:

  • Provide leadership in developing strong relationships with the medical communities and organizations that engage with and support the mission of the PA program.

  • Work with the Medical Director and Program Director to develop and maintain high- quality supervised clinical training sites.

  • Provide training and support to clinical preceptors involved in teaching PA students.

  • In collaboration with the program director, troubleshoot/problem-solve any concerns on behalf of students, clinical sites/preceptors, or instruction/activities related to clinical-year instruction and activities.

  • Manage a clinical tracking system and ensure performance tracking of students during the clinical year, including analysis of obtained data.

  • Assist in the holistic student admissions process.

  • Participate in ongoing program evaluation and planning.

  • Serve on departmental and college committees as assigned.

Scholarly Work:

  • Scholarly activity is expected of all faculty, although this can be defined in different ways. Examples of scholarly work includes educational research, presentations at professional conferences, academic projects focused on teaching and learning, systems-based practice and improvement, to name a few.

Service:

  • Participate in service-oriented activities that promote the program and/or college mission.

  • Maintaining a part-time clinical practice is encouraged.

  • Service to local, regional, and national professional organizations such as PAEA, AAPA, NCCPA, MBME or MAPA is encouraged.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPING PA PROGRAM: Carroll College has applied for Accreditation

  • Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Carroll College's Master of Physician Assistant Studies program anticipates matriculating its first class in August of 2026 pending achieving Accreditation

  • Provisional status at the March 2026 ARC-PA meeting. Accreditation

  • Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program's ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding accreditation-provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.

Carroll College's Physician Assistant (PA) program will be third graduate program to be established at Carroll College (in addition to the Master of Social Work and Master of Accountancy programs). The Program is designed to be an intensive 27-month curriculum leading to a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS). The college aims to matriculate the first cohort of 34 students into the program in the fall of 2026, pending provisional accreditation approval.
