Job Description and Duties
Are you interested in leading a multi-disciplinary team of professional engineers and scientists to solve complex problems in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta? Would you like to help guide environmental compliance to ensure a safe and effective water supply for millions of Californians? We are looking for a Principal Engineer to address environmental, infrastructure and operations issues affecting California fisheries and the State Water Project (SWP) in the Delta.
The Principal Engineer for Water Resources oversees critical projects related to the SWP and future water supplies. Responsibilities include formulating and recommending programs, advising executive management within the Department of Water Resources (DWR), and collaborating with other agencies.
The incumbent must have extensive knowledge of SWP, water resource engineering, environmental permitting, and Delta operational effects on aquatic endangered and native species. In addition, the incumbent oversees day-to-day activities related to personnel management, fiscal management, and general administrative tasks. These responsibilities include employee appraisal, training, budget planning, and effective communication. The incumbent also assists the Division Manager in planning and directing water resources engineering efforts, including program and project management, business development, and human resource policies.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid certificate registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and possession of a valid California State driver's license in order to drive to various meetings and project locations.

The Principal Engineer, W.R. should have knowledge of the SWP and Bay-Delta issues, operations and Delta diversion facilities and fish protection facilities; environmental compliance and regulatory experience; fish predation and fishery issues; overseeing and managing staff, program resources, budgets and contracts; overseeing the management, planning and implementation of complex projects; and working with external agencies and stakeholders. The incumbent must make prudent, effective, and independent decisions, take action requiring mature judgment and tact, and work with diverse multidisciplinary team members. Incumbent should be able to represent DWR, be an effective speaker in large groups and possess excellent writing skills.
