Position Summary:

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies is recruiting for a Principal Engineer in Jacksonville, Florida.

The successful candidate will be a key part of Mechanical Engineering team supporting highly automated Manufacturing Platforms with continuous improvement design solutions in support to the growth of base business, new product introductions, reliability-based asset management and new equipment / enabling technologies.

The Principal Engineer will be directly responsible for design, fabrication and implementation of continuous improvement solutions relative to existing equipment throughput, reliability and obsolescence mitigation for Vision Supply Chain at the Jacksonville Site. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring best practices and process standardization adherence with the Limerick Site. The candidate must possess an ability to work horizontally and vertically with technical peers, stakeholders and key functions to enable site's strategy and goals/objectives. The candidate must possess ability to manage capital projects supporting continuous improvement activities and manufacturing line conversions across multiple platforms. The Principal Engineer will possess a strong tactical/strategic vision and a willingness to be hands-on in all aspects of manufacturing.

In this role, Principal Engineer will provide subject matter expertise in equipment design and function and provide leadership in deploying best practices in Problem Solving, Engineering & Technology. The candidate must have a strong track record in developing technical solutions in an automated manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deploy equipment solutions and improvements that meet the Quality Management System and EHS&S requirements.

  • Responsible for the leadership and execution of projects focused on delivering design improvements that influences positively in the metrics of the business, strategic directions and financial results.

  • Manage engineering technician group in support of meeting site Goals and Objectives.

  • Ensure the skills, capabilities and talents of Engineering Technician direct reports are effectively leveraged.

  • Ensures a methodical approach in solving complex problems and utilizes statistics to demonstrate resolution and effectiveness

  • Manages Capital Appropriations relative to approved design solutions.

  • Collaborates with internal resources and external vendors in development of design, fabrication and deployment of technical solutions.

  • Provides a strong leadership style which reflects the standards and expectations outlined in the Johnson & Johnson Credo.

  • Deliver a high level of internal customer satisfaction by application of Engineering best practices and tools.

  • Focused on building strong relationships within the Operations organization and across the Franchise organizations to ensure alignment and support for business Goals and Objectives.

  • Develops, in partnership with advanced engineering, technology roadmaps and the continual evaluation of new innovative processes, to ensure future competitive advantage.

  • Keep up to date on new developments and technologies in assigned disciplines and present on new 'Best Practice' methodologies, procedures, processes and equipment to the company in a proactive manner.

  • Support Proactive Quality design improvements across the Quality organization to reduce NC's and execute CAPA processes and activities.

  • Maintain the behavioral standards within engineering to ensure they meet company standards and policy.

  • Take full responsibility for all Environmental and Health & Safety per J&J standards.



A minimum of Bachelor of Science Degree required, preferably in an Engineering discipline. Masters or Doctorate in Science or Engineering is preferred.

Experiences & Skills:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of related experience required.

  • A proven ability to manage technical projects from design through deployment within automated manufacturing processes required.

  • Change management, project management and the ability to work effectively and drive alignment in a global environment through strong communication and empowerment required.

  • In-depth experience in the manufacturing of automation technology in a highly regulated environment required.

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Full understanding of Machine Design and Equipment standards required.

  • Experience in the medical devices and/or Pharmaceutical industry preferred.

  • Experience with PLC's preferred.


  • Black Belt Certification preferred.

  • Up to 10% travel both domestic and/or international required

A Day in the Life * Participates in Business Team operations to approve testing of all new product designs, design test parameters for R&D, Operations and QA, conduct reliability assessments, evaluates and approves ECN changes for existing products, monitor design developments for maintaining quality compliance and assists in software engineering, testing, and validation. * Partners with Mfg. Engineering to assist in developing test methods, equipment acquisition for new product testing, validations/qualifications, statistical analysis of data for significance, and other documented requirements for quality objectives. * Participates in new product development, and establish quality and reliability expectancy of the finished product. * Identifies, applies, and updates engineering and technical standards requirements for devices, including standards compliance in product design, manufacture, and labeling. * Investigates and reports on corrective action effectiveness and timeliness. Assists audits of finished products, final inspections, returned and serviced products. Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned. * Develops, modifies, applies and maintains quality standards and protocol for processing materials into partially finished or finished materials product. * Collaborates with engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure quality standards are in place. * Devises and implements methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating the precision and accuracy of products and production equipment. * Designs or specifies inspection and testing mechanisms and equipment; conducts quality assurance tests; and performs statistical analysis to assess the cost of and determine the responsibility for products or materials that do not meet required standards and specifications. * Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards and that documentation is compliant with requirements. * May specialize in the areas of design, incoming material, production control, product evaluation and reliability, inventory control and/or research and development as they apply to product or process quality. Must Have: Minimum Requirements EDUCATION REQUIRED: * Bachelor's degree in engineering or sciences.
