Principal Engineer

JCPenney is undergoing a significant transformational change and is looking for someone to bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to help in this journey. As the most senior engineering individual contributor to the Digital Organization, you are someone who has experience working through organizational changes, has in depth experience with the product operating model and know what it means to shift to a DevOps model of development and ownership. You are deeply technical and know how to use that knowledge to help guide technical direction for a large digital organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

• You are a force multiplier helping less experienced engineers' level up their skillset.

• As a key contributor to technology strategy, you see ahead to future possibilities and can leverage technology to translate them into breakthrough strategies.

• Ensure the digital organization is up to date on the latest technology trends and techniques.

• Work directly with four in a box leadership, Product, UX, Engineering and Architecture to certify that design and implementation follow published guidelines or alternatively develop new emerging guidelines to achieve expected outcomes.

• Ensure that product teams follow industry engineering best practices through evaluation and continuous improvement.

• Lead research and design efforts, partnering directly with architecture to design and build proof of concept solutions.

• Help evaluate and suggest improvements for product team solution designs.

• Ensure job descriptions and job families for individual contributors align with industry best practices.

• Work closely with Architecture to ensure standards and patterns are up to date and reflect ongoing change.

• Represent the JC Penney organization by presenting achievements locally and/or nationally at conferences.

• Participate in RFI/RFP work alongside Engineering and Architecture leadership.

• Thought leader regarding the software development lifecycle practices ensuring quality outcomes.

• Strong belief in the power of mentorship for individual contributors at all levels of the organization

• Experience working with organizations to provide role clarity for individual contributor roles.

• Understand the value of continually bringing in entry level associates to an organization.

• Expert in industry practices as it relates to building highly performant web scale experiences.

• Experience developing high availability applications deployed in a cloud platform.

• Experience with all portions of the JCP tech stack.

• Experience in working in Retail is preferred.
