The Principal Engineer works closely with the Manager of Cloud Operations to help lead a team of engineers in strategic and day-to-day execution ensuring all service level agreements and customer satisfaction goals are achieved. She/he collaborates with technical leaders, business units, and applications/integration teams to ensure understanding, alignment, and achievement of business and customer needs. Given the complexity and range of the role, the Principal Engineer is expected to be knowledgeable across development life cycle methodologies, operations, security, infrastructure, and support, to bridge cross-functional areas.
The Principal Engineer is the subject matter expert across the complete life cycle of cloud operations to ensure maximum performance, reliability, and scalability of the enterprise cloud infrastructure. This support includes ownership of the operational monitoring tools and the development/management methods of remediation (proactive and reactive support models). She/he is a functional leader of engineering activities such as but not limited to: development and configuration patterns, practices, standards, and workflows, automation frameworks, and solution design. The Principal Engineer also leads operational activities such as but not limited to: infrastructure reliability including proactive and reactive support models, toolset automation and integration, and performance management.
The Principal Engineer leads operational support, including escalations related to defined SLAs using standard processes and ensuring customer satisfaction. She/he motivates the team to ensure root cause analysis, escalation, reporting, tracking and resolution of all issues, with a continual focus on high availability, continuous improvement, and agility. The Principal Engineer works closely with product management organizations to identify opportunities for improved collaboration and delivery agility. She/he provides technical guidance and development to foster an environment of continuous improvement in the cloud environment.
The Principal Engineer is expected to deliver the technical implementation of the hosting infrastructure for projects and upgrades, coordinating with other technical teams and business partners. She/he is expected to work consultatively across technical disciplines and application owners to provide end-to-end infrastructure to support CTCA Health applications.
The Principal Engineer will administer the hosting infrastructure (IaaS and PaaS architectures) through routine, modern monitoring and management techniques. She/she will ensure that all systems under management are designed, deployed, and managed consistent with application requirements, high availability, and cost efficiency wherever possible.
The Principal Engineer will fully document technical implementations, SOPs, upgrades, and changes to the hosting infrastructure, with emphasis on technical diagramming. She/he will present technical documentation to technical leaders of other disciplines to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across the organization.
The Principal Engineer will secure the hosting infrastructure by establishing and enforcing security policies, defining and monitoring infrastructure access mechanisms, and routinely testing the infrastructure for weaknesses. She/he will regularly engage the InfoSec Department for implementation proposals and operational security concerns.
The Principal Engineer will practice continuous development of technical knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities. She/he will stay apprised of industry trends and new service offerings, and act as a change agent across technology disciplines.
The Principal Engineer will provide constructive feedback, mentoring, cross training, and technical direction to others. She/he will proactively identify gaps in knowledge, skills, or abilities, and create opportunities to build bench strength across the team in core areas.
Skills, Education and Additional Information
Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Computer Information Systems preferred
7+ years of experience building distributed systems in an enterprise environment
5+ years of experience supporting Cloud-based distributed systems
5+ years of software development and engineering services technical experience
5+ years of experience in Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline engineering
Microsoft Certifications: MCSE or MCSD preferred
AWS Certifications: Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Developer preferred
IT experience within a multi-facility healthcare organization preferred
Comprehends complex verbal and written instructions and is effective at written and verbal communications
Strong experience with distributed systems and architectures, including troubleshooting of integration, performance, and availability issues
Multiple prior project experiences working on and leading Agile teams
Deep understanding of and prior experience with cloud-based Web and application hosting environments (e.g. Microsoft Azure, AWS, etc.)
Understanding of and prior experience with software development and modern scripting languages
Strong understanding of system monitoring/analysis tools
Strong understanding of systems, networking, applications and how they interoperate together
Strong understanding of how Web, application, and database layers interact including data flows
Excellent understanding of Web services, modular development, minimum viable product best practices, Agile project management and release management
Thorough understanding of TCP/IP, with the ability to subnet and troubleshoot misconfiguration issues
Intermediate/Advanced PowerShell scripting knowledge
Intermediate/Advanced SQL scripting knowledge
Ability to perform data analysis
Advanced skills in the use of modern work management platforms (e.g. Jira, Confluence, TFS, SharePoint, etc.)
Possesses a strong business perspective to convey technology concepts and solutions that will satisfy the business requirements
Promotes solutions that are cost conscious, while being technically sound and supporting business requirements
Self-starter who is capable of effectively managing own time and ability to delegate to others
Demonstrated leadership including previous performance as a highly effective team member and team leader
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of tools
Team-building and mentoring of others, promoting improved communication, documentation, technical skills, and interpersonal skills
