Job Purpose (Job Summary): *
The Database Engineer will be a member of our senior technical support engineering team whose primary focus will be to assist in maintaining a secure, stable, and high performing compute environment. The core focus of this specific role will be on improving efficiency of operations, monitoring, tracing, and triaging of issues within our Microsoft SQL database infrastructure and applications.
This role requires advancedfunctional expertise in database engineering, troubleshooting, tuning, analysis, etc. This role may direct high level work on complex projects or initiatives. This role will serve as expert in the database area and will be sought out for input on significant technical and business decisions. This person may be responsible for the execution of complex initiatives and may contribute to strategic planning within their area of expertise. This person must havethe ability to apply standard troubleshooting techniques in support of rapid resolutions of issues, as well as an in-depth knowledge of IT operations, platforms, and disciplines. This role also includes advising teams on any recommended changes needed to the design of key applications, infrastructure systems and procedures.
This is a business-critical role that will involve tackling challenging, unique situations on a daily basis and will require interaction with multiple infrastructure and development teams in the company.
This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team or independently under minimal direction. Interfacing with teams outside of the IT Operations group to gather requirements, collaborate, evangelize and incorporate security policies will be a key component of this role.
This is a 24x7 on-call environment therefore this individual may be required to perform duties during off hours.
Key Responsibilities / Duties:
Be part of the team responsible for performance, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning
Analyze large, complex systems to determine performance bottlenecks, application bugs, and opportunities to improve efficiency
Work closely with developers in troubleshooting wide array of issues, supporting new features and services, and insuring effective use of the computing infrastructure
Collaborate with teams to identify innovative ways to improve best practices and procedures
Mentor other team members on latest industry tools and techniques
Combine open-source and commercial technologies to build services that will positively impact the business
Serve as primary escalation point for critical database issues related to core systems and applications.
Create documentation of triage steps, procedures, policies and standards for various applications and systems
Participate in system architecture reviews of new or existing data applications, developing guidelines, and enterprise standards
Participate in all aspects of the application lifecycle: requirements analysis & definition, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and sustainment
Collaborate with other engineering teams on new systems, technology, and support tools
Work Experience / Knowledge: *
o 3-5 years experience in application support/tracing diagnosing systems hardware and software
Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment while interfacing with multiple internal clients.
Supporting Microsoft SQL Databases in medium to large datacenter.
o In-depth experience and knowledge supporting Microsoft SQL 2008, 2012, 2014
o Comprehensive knowledge of SQL tuning, security, extended event tracing and diagnostic tools.
o -Performance Tuning
Capture and analyze database activity to identify improvements in indexing, file structure, maintenance processes, and query performance
Plan and conduct database architecture assessments that examine DBMS and database configuration and performance
o _-Replication Technology _
Familiarity with backups, restores and recovery models.
Experience utilizing high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) options for MSSQL Server.
o Working knowledge of Storage Protocols and systems, iSCSI, NAS, Fiber Channel, and NETAPP appliances
o Experience analyzing windows perfmon, and etl storage tracing along with basics of storage networks.
o Experience with monitoring tools such as, SolarWinds DPA, SentryOne Plan Explorer, or equivalent.
o Experiencesupporting or using Wiki based documentation systems
o Version control experience using systems such as GIT, Mercurial, and MS Team Foundation a plus

Formal Education:(minimum requirement to perform job duties)
Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent work experience.
Normal work environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature
Intense visual concentration may be required along with the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds
Frequent sitting and intermittent walking is also required
Normally works a regular schedule of hours
Regular 24/7 on-call rotation for Crisis Management required. Not generally on-call for IT BR Implementation unless a disaster is declared (or one is imminent).
Required to work weeknights/weekends during Disaster Recovery testing or if a disaster or crisis situation has been declared
Domestic and international travel is possible
